India’s Lonar Crater began causing confusion soon after it was identified in 1823 by a British officer named C.J.E. Alexander. Lonar Crater sits inside the Deccan Plateau—a massive plain of volcanic basalt rock leftover from eruptions some 65 million years ago. Its location in this basalt field suggested to some geologists that it was a volcanic crater. Today, however, Lonar Crater is understood to result from a meteorite impact that occurred between 35,000 and 50,000 years ago. The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) flying on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this image of Lonar Crater on November 29, 2004. In this simulated-true-color…

Burials of Africans slaves found at the old rubbish dump in Portugal Adult female skeleton found at Valle da Gafaria, Portugal, suggests a careless burial. Portuguese explorers such as Henry the Navigator started sailing to Africa in the early 15th century, bringing both goods and enslaved people back. A new archeological study of more than 150 skeletons dumped in Lagos, Portugal, reveals that there were no proper burials given to many of the enslaved Africans and that several of them may even have been tied to death. The skeletons come from the site of Valle da Gafaria, which was located…
About 15 million years ago, a cosmic body races toward Earth. This asteroid, about 1 kilometer in diameter, is accompanied by a satellite about 150 meters in diameter (figure 1). Traveling over 70,000 km/h, both crash into the Alb highlands and create two craters with diameters of 25 and 4 km, respectively: the Nördlinger Ries and the Steinheimer Basin. At the point of impact the pressure reaches several million bar and the temperature more than 20,000 ˚C (figure 2). The asteroid and parts of the struck rock vaporize or melt. A pressure front (shock wave) races at supersonic speeds through…
Thousands of emperor penguins cluster on the ice of Atka Bay in Antarctica, mostly unaware that an interloper lives among them. Slightly shorter than the average adult emperor, the 3-foot-tall (1-meter-tall) autonomous robot sits silently within the colony, nondescript compared with humans who sometimes emerge from a nearby research station. The birds occasionally notice ECHO, an unmanned and remote-controlled ground vehicle, because “they exhibit curiosity to everything that they don’t know,” said Dan Zitterbart, associate scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. An emperor penguin chick sticks close to its parent for feeding time. But it’s a passing…

With their nesting sites buried under a blanket of snow, some petrels and skuas made no attempts at reproducing in December 2021 and January 2022 Snow petrels were among the seabird species that did not reproduce in Antarctica’s Dronning Maud Land region in 2021-22. Natalie Tapson via Flickr under CC BY-NC-SA 2.0 Every November and December, hundreds of thousands of polar seabirds lay their eggs on bare ground on Antarctica as the Southern Hemisphere summer begins. They dutifully protect the eggs until they hatch, then switch into new-parent mode and care for the chicks. By February or March, those hatchlings are typically strong enough to fly.…

The death of the dinosaurs was just one of five global events that saw millions of species wiped out. How do these events happen? And how can we stop it happening again? Can we stop another mass extinction? (Image credit: Getty Images) For the last 10,000 years, Earth has been in the midst of yet another extinction event that is rapidly removing animals from our planet. Scientists define a mass extinction as around three-quarters of all species dying out over a short geological time, which is anything less than 2.8 million years, according to The Conversation(opens in new tab). Right now, humans…
The impact crater is the second discovered in China. (Image credit: NASA Earth Observatory image by Lauren Dauphin, using Landsat data from the U.S. Geological Survey.) A crescent-shaped crater in Northeast China holds the record as the largest impact crater on Earth that formed in the last 100,000 years. Prior to 2020, the only other impact crater ever discovered in China was found in Xiuyan county of the coastal province of Liaoning, according to a statement from the NASA Earth Observatory(opens in new tab). The mating dance of sandhill cranes Sandhill Crane Cranes are elegant dancers and have one of the most well-known bird mating rituals. Dancing peaks during mating season but can occur any time of year. Experts do not completely understand the behavior, but it seems to play a role in bonding. During their courting rituals, sandhill cranes vocalize, dance, jump, move their heads and extend their wings, which can stretch to 7 feet wide. Mated sandhill cranes also sing a unison call during courtship. Curiously, young birds also dance—this is believed to be an important part of their motor development. Humans…

A severe geomagnetic storm from a huge hole in the sun’s corona caused a massive disturbance in Earth’s magnetic field. The surprise event sparked auroras as far south as Alabama and northern California. Photographer Dakota Snider caught the auroras from his airplane window, while his fellow passengers slept early Friday morning. (Image credit: Dakota Snider) The strongest solar storm to hit Earth for six years sparked stunning auroras across the U.S., with intense light displays appearing as far south as Alabama and Northern California. Yet no one saw it coming. The March 24 solar storm was the result of a “stealth” coronal…

The mysterious 6,500-year-old burial of a woman and several arrowheads in northern France may reveal details of how women were regarded in that society during the Neolithic period, or New Stone Age, a new study finds. The researchers investigated giant graves known as “long barrows” — large earthen mounds, often hundreds of feet long and sometimes retained by wooden palisades that have since rotted away. Of the 19 human burials in the Neolithic cemetery at Fleury-sur-Orne in Normandy, the team analyzed the DNA of 14 individuals; but only one was female. The woman was buried with “symbolically male” arrows in her grave,…

Torghatten is a 258-meter mountain that rises on Torget Island, a wedge of land located in the municipality of Brønnøy in Nordland county, Norway. It is a granite peak that became famous for the hole located right in its center, a natural tunnel 160 meters long, 20 meters wide and 35 meters high originating from the erosion of water and ice during the last ice age. Of course, there are plenty of explanations for this phenomenon of a hole that spans the rocky summit from side to side, and these include a few legends. One such legend explains that the hole came about after a troll fell…
Sorvagsvatn, also called Leitisvatn, is located in the northern part of Vagar, an island located in the Danish archipelago of the Faroe Islands. The lake is known for the singularity of its position, close to a precipice on the Atlantic which from its rocky plateau appears to overlook the ocean. In reality, it is a magnificent optical illusion. Its elongated shape and the wonderful plays of light, influencing perspective, help to deceive the human eye, giving the impression of a surreal inclination. This natural beauty spans an area of 1.5 square miles and is the largest lake in the archipelago. Despite appearing to…
