Albatrosses mainly tend to mate with one partner for life. Typically, 1% to 3% of albatross couples separate annually, but climate change has risen that figure to a rate of up to 8%. Researchers analyzed data covering more than 15,000 albatross breeding pairs over 15 years. Food scarcity is causing the birds to return late for mating season, which decreases the chance of successfully hatching a chick By mating with the same partner each year, the albatross couples build trust, communication and coordination to help them raise demanding chicks successfully. David Cook Wildlife Photography When black-browed albatrosses mate, they’re usually in it…

THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS — Vestiges of a moon-forming cataclysm could have kick-started plate tectonics on Earth. The leading explanation for the origin of the moon proposes that a Mars-sized planet, dubbed Theia, struck the nascent Earth, ejecting a cloud of debris into space that later coalesced into a satellite (SN: 3/2/18). New computer simulations suggest that purported remains of Theia deep inside the planet could have also triggered the onset of subduction, a hallmark of modern plate tectonics, geodynamicist Qian Yuan of Caltech reported March 13 at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference. The story offers a cohesive explanation for how Earth gained both…

The classroom legacy of Kepler focuses on the improvements he made to the telescope and his laws of planetary motion. However, these were merely byproducts of the man’s lifelong ambition to improve the science of astrology so that it could stand up to…

Dads usually teach zebra finches their songs. (Image credit: Shutterstock) Zebra finches usually learn to sing from their fathers. But now, scientists have taught the little birds to memorize a tune without ever learning it — and they did so by implanting memories of the songs in the birds’ brains. This strange experiment was designed to discover the brain pathways that encode note duration in the birds. Ultimately, the point is to draw parallels with how humans learn to speak. Hopefully, the research will help scientists target genes and neurons to improve language learning in people with autism and other conditions that affect vocalization.…
