Actress Jennifer Lawrence reveals she contemplated leaving Hollywood

Superstar actress considered her career ending while taking breaks from movies

Actress Jennifer Lawrence says she mulled retirement while taking breaks from making films and says she would have been “at peace” with the decision.
Lawrence, 35, made the comments while appearing on “The Graham Norton Show,” a British talk show. She stopped working from 2019 to 2021, then again in 2023. The first break came after a string of box office disappointments.
“I took a little time,” Lawrence said during her appearance. “I was working all of my 20s and then I was like … what’s out here? What’s going on?”
According to People, Norton asked Lawrence if she was concerned about not being able to revive her career after taking such a long break.
“I was at peace with that possibility of happening. [Hollywood] is a lot,” Lawrence said. “I think I would’ve been fine.”
However, she quickly countered with “Well, I mean, no — I would be really upset.”
Lawrence returned from the first break in 2021 with “Don’t Look Up,” a popular movie on Netflix that also starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, and Timothée Chalamet. She took another break after making “No Hard Feelings” (2023) before returning this year with “Die My Love,” which will be released Nov. 7.
In 2022, she and her husband, Cooke Maroney, welcomed a son, Cy. The couple had a second child earlier this year.
Lawrence became a superstar when she portrayed Katniss Everdeen in the “Hunger Games” films, the first released in 2012. She also had hits with “Silver Linings Playbook” (2012), “American Hustle” (2013) and “Joy” (2015).
But her films “Mother!” (2017) and “Red Sparrow” (2018) underperformed at the box office.
In 2021, Lawrence told Vanity Fair she didn’t think she had been producing good movies.
“I just think everybody had gotten sick of me. I’d gotten sick of me,” she said. “It had just gotten to a point where I couldn’t do anything right. If I walked a red carpet, it was, ‘Why didn’t she run?’”
