I was kneeling at my daughter’s grave, two years after her funeral, when a twelve-year-old boy tapped my shoulder and said, “Sir, your daughter is alive. Give me something of hers so my dog can…

“Sir, your daughter is alive. Give me something of hers so my dog can track her. ”

Janusz Aleksander Wiśniewski pressed his forehead against the icy gravestone, his tears dripping onto the gray marble. Two years had passed since his life had been turned upside down, but the pain was as sharp as it had been on the very first day.

Then he felt a light tap on his shoulder. He turned and saw a boy of about twelve, wearing a worn cap and simple clothes. Beside him, a white, medium-sized dog wagged her tail and looked at him with intelligent eyes. “You’re Zuzanna’s father, aren’t you?

” the boy asked in a firm voice. Janusz jumped. How did this boy know his daughter’s name? “Sir, your daughter is alive.

Please give me something of hers so my dog can track her,” the boy said without hesitation, pointing at the dog. “Are you crazy, boy? ” Janusz stood up abruptly, feeling a mix of anger and despair. “My daughter was buried here two years ago.

How dare you come here. ”

“And she liked to draw butterflies, right? ” the boy interrupted. “And she had a doll named Słodyczka that she carried everywhere.

Janusz froze. Those details were nowhere. Not in the newspapers that covered the case, not in the official documents. “Who are you?

” he whispered. “My name is Łukasz. And this is Pola,” he said, stroking the dog. “We look for people.

“People? ” Janusz repeated, still confused. “People who have gone missing. Pola has a very good nose.

She was trained by a man who used to work for the police, Mr. Ryszard. He lives on my block. ”

Janusz looked at the boy with a mixture of disbelief and something he hadn’t felt in a long time: hope.

But he quickly pushed the feeling away. He couldn’t allow himself to believe again. “My daughter didn’t go missing. She died in an accident.

I saw them bring her body from the hospital myself. ”

“Are you sure? ” Łukasz crossed his arms. “Did you see her face?

Janusz hesitated. The truth was, he couldn’t look. The coffin was closed. They told him it would be better that way, that it would preserve his last memories of the girl.

“Please listen,” Łukasz said. “I know this must be hard to believe, but Pola was sniffing around here yesterday and she got very agitated at this grave. She only acts like that when she smells someone who is still breathing. ”

Janusz felt his legs go weak.

It couldn’t be true. Two years of mourning, of guilt, of a life that had become nothing but a string of empty days. “How do you know those things about Zuzanna? ” he asked, trying to keep his voice steady.

“Because I saw her, sir. About three months ago. I was looking for Mrs. Marta’s cat with Pola when we passed by a house on Wesołe estate.

Pola stopped in front of the gate and started whimpering. I looked and saw a little blonde girl playing in the yard. ”

“Blonde? ” Janusz felt his heart race.

“She was alone, drawing with a stick on the ground. When she saw me, she waved. I waved back, but then a woman came out of the house and quickly pulled her inside. The woman looked at me with fear in her eyes.

“Are you sure it was her? ”

“That’s why I need something of hers, sir. Pola can distinguish anyone’s scent, even after a long time. If it’s really her, Pola will know.

Janusz ran his hands through his graying hair. At forty-two, he looked a decade older than he had before he lost Zuzanna. Or before he thought he had lost her. “Even if… even if this is true, what do you want in return?

“Nothing, sir. ” Łukasz lowered his eyes. “I lost someone too. My older sister, Gabriela.

She disappeared four years ago when she was fifteen. She was never found. I promised I would help other families find the ones they lost. ”

The sincerity in the boy’s voice touched something deep in Janusz’s chest.

He looked again at the gravestone, at the photo of Zuzanna smiling at just six years old. “How did you know I come here? ”

“I sometimes work at the cemetery, helping Mr. Czarek with maintenance.

You come here every Sunday. Ever since I started working here, I’ve been gathering the courage to talk to you. ”

Janusz studied the boy more closely. He was thin, with features that spoke of a hard life, but his eyes shone with a determination Janusz recognized.

It was the same determination he himself had when he was young, building his business from nothing. “If I give your dog her clothes, what happens next? ”

“If Pola confirms it’s your daughter’s scent, we’ll follow the trail wherever it leads. Pola can track old scents, but the fresher, the better.

And if it’s not her, I’m sorry for giving you false hope, and I’ll leave. ”

Janusz closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Two years of living in darkness, accepting a version of events that had never fully convinced him. Maybe it was time to seek the truth, even if it would hurt even more.

“Where do you live? ”

“On Pod Dzwonem estate, sir. I live with my grandmother, Grandma Grażyna. And Mr.

Ryszard, the policeman, lives on the lower street. He taught Pola to track. He said she has a natural talent. ”

Janusz made a decision that would change everything.

“Alright, I’ll go get her clothes. But if this is some kind of scam…”

“It’s not a scam, sir. I just want to help. ”

Forty minutes later, Janusz parked his black Mercedes sedan in front of the house where he had lived alone since the separation.

A house that had become a mausoleum of memories of Zuzanna. The girl’s room remained exactly as she had left it on that fateful Sunday morning: scattered toys, drawings taped to the wall, the bed still unmade, as if she might return at any moment to sleep. Janusz opened the closet and took out a blue dress with yellow flowers, Zuzanna’s favorite. She insisted on wearing it at least once a week.

The faint scent of the children’s soap she used still lingered on it. When he returned to the cemetery, Łukasz and Pola were waiting patiently under a tree. The boy stood up as soon as he saw him. “I brought it,” Janusz said, handing over the dress.

Łukasz carefully took the garment and gave it to Pola to smell. The dog sniffed intensely, then raised her head and began wagging her tail excitedly. “She recognizes her,” Łukasz smiled. “Pola only acts like this when she finds the scent she’s looking for.

Now we go to Wesołe estate. Pola, search. ”

The dog immediately lowered her muzzle and began sniffing the ground around the grave. After a few minutes, she barked once and started walking toward the cemetery exit.

Janusz felt his heart race. Was it possible that his daughter was alive after two years of believing she was gone forever? They followed Pola through the streets of the city. The dog seemed determined, stopping occasionally to sniff poles and corners, but always choosing a specific direction.

“How did you learn to track people? ” Janusz asked as they walked. “When my sister disappeared, I went crazy looking for her. Mr.

Ryszard saw me crying one day and said he could teach me something. He had a dog before Pola, Gwiazdka, who was a specialist at this. When she got old and passed away, he trained Pola. He said she has even more talent than Gwiazdka.

They walked for almost an hour until they reached Wesołe estate, a neighborhood of average-to-low standard with simple houses and narrow streets. Pola led them through several blocks until she stopped in front of a yellow house with white bars. “This is it,” Łukasz said. “This is the house where I saw the girl.

Janusz looked at the building. It was an ordinary house with a small garden in front and laundry hanging in the yard. Pola was clearly agitated, sniffing the gate intensely and barking softly. “Are you sure?

“Pola doesn’t make mistakes. If she’s acting like this, it’s because your daughter’s scent is strong here. ”

Janusz approached the gate and looked through the bars. The yard was empty, but he could see scattered toys: a doll, crayons, a drawing notebook.

His heart almost stopped when he saw a drawing taped to the refrigerator, visible through the back door. It was a drawing of a butterfly. Exactly the kind Zuzanna used to make. “I have to go in there,” he said in a trembling voice.

“Calm down, sir. You can’t just barge in. We’ll knock on the door and talk to whoever lives here. ”

Janusz took a deep breath, trying to control his anxiety.

Łukasz was right. He had to stay calm. They knocked on the front door. After a few minutes, a woman of about fifty appeared.

She had gray hair tied in a bun and wore a floral apron. “Good morning! ” the woman said, looking at them with disbelief. “Good morning, ma’am.

My name is Janusz. This is Łukasz. We’re looking for my daughter, who went missing two years ago. ”

The woman visibly paled.

“I’m sorry, but I can’t help you. Only my husband and I live here. ”

“Would you mind if our dog sniffed around a little? ” Łukasz showed Pola, who was still agitated.

“She’s trained to find people. ”

“No, she can’t. You have to leave. ” The woman tried to close the door, but Janusz stopped her.

“Please, just a minute. If there’s nothing here, we’ll leave and won’t bother you again. ”

“I already said no. You have no right to be here.

At that moment, a child’s voice came from inside the house. “Aunt Estera, can I play in the yard? ”

Janusz felt all the strength leave his body. It was Zuzanna’s voice.

He would recognize that voice anywhere in the world. “Zuzanna! ” he shouted. “Zuzanna, it’s me, your dad!

The woman tried to slam the door, but Janusz pushed her aside and entered the house. “Zuzanna! Zuzanna, where are you? ” He ran through the living room, looking into every room.

Łukasz followed with Pola, who was barking louder and louder. “Get out of my house! I’ll call the police! ” the woman screamed.

Janusz opened the door to one of the rooms, and his life changed forever. There she was. Zuzanna, his little girl, alive. She was sitting on the bed, playing with a doll he didn’t recognize.

When she saw him, her eyes widened. “Dad,” she said, as if she couldn’t believe what she was seeing. “My daughter. ” Janusz fell to his knees and hugged her tightly, crying like he never had in his life.

“My daughter, you’re alive? You’re alive. ”

Zuzanna hugged him back, but Janusz noticed she seemed confused, frightened. “Dad, why didn’t you come for me sooner?

Aunt Estera said you didn’t want me anymore. ”

Janusz felt rage build in his chest, but he forced himself to stay calm for Zuzanna. “That’s not true, sweetheart. Dad looked for you every day.

Every day. ”

“But Mom said… what did she say? ”

“Mom said you were busy and that I had to stay with Aunt Estera for a while. ”

Janusz looked at Łukasz, who was watching everything with teary eyes.

Then he looked at the woman, who was leaning against the wall, clearly terrified. “Where is my ex-wife? ”

“I don’t know. She brought the girl here and said it was temporary.

That was almost two years ago. ”

“Temporary? ” Janusz stood up, still holding Zuzanna in his arms. “And you believed it was normal for a mother to leave her daughter with a stranger for two years?

“She paid well, and she said she had problems with you, that you were aggressive. ”

“Aggressive? ” Janusz almost shouted. “I never raised my hand to my daughter or my ex-wife.

Zuzanna started crying, frightened by the loud voices. “It’s okay, sweetheart,” Janusz comforted her. “Dad isn’t angry with you. Dad is very happy he found you.

“Sir,” Łukasz stepped forward. “I think it’s better if we leave and take Zuzanna home. We’ll deal with the rest later. ”

Janusz nodded.

The priority was getting his daughter out of there and keeping her safe. “Zuzanna, do you want to go home with dad? ”

“Can I take Słodyczka? ” she asked, showing a different doll than the one he remembered.

“Of course, sweetheart. You can take whatever you want. ”

As Zuzanna gathered her things, Janusz turned to the woman. “What’s your name?

“Estera. Estera Kowalska. ”

“Estera. I will uncover the whole truth about this.

You will tell me everything you know. But right now, I just want to take my daughter home. ”

“Please, don’t report me. I was only helping.

Your ex-wife said it was just for a while. ”

“Where can I find her? ”

“I don’t know. She changed her phone number months ago.

She only showed up occasionally to see the girl. ”

Janusz picked Zuzanna up again and headed for the door. Łukasz followed with Pola. “Thank you,” Janusz said to Łukasz as they left the house.

“If it weren’t for you, I never would have found my daughter. ”

“I told you I’d help, sir. How can I repay you? ”

“You don’t have to repay me.

Just take good care of her. ”

Janusz looked at the twelve-year-old boy who had changed his life forever. A boy who, despite his young age and difficulties, devoted his time to helping others. “Łukasz, do you have somewhere to live?

“Yes, sir. I live with my grandmother. She’s fairly healthy, but she can’t work much. ”

Janusz had an idea.

“How about you and your grandmother come to live with me and Zuzanna? My house is big, there’s plenty of room, and Zuzanna will need friends after everything that’s happened. ”

Łukasz smiled broadly. “Really, sir?

“I’m very serious. You’re family now. ”

On the way back home, Zuzanna fell asleep in the back seat of the car. Janusz drove in silence, still processing everything that had happened.

His daughter was alive after two years of mourning. Alive and safe. But now he had to understand what had really happened. Why had Paulina, his ex-wife, done this?

Why had they pretended Zuzanna had died? And more importantly, who else was involved in this farce? When they arrived home, Janusz put Zuzanna to bed in her own room. She was exhausted and confused.

She needed time to process everything. “Łukasz, do you want to call your grandmother and tell her about the move? ”

Łukasz nodded, and Janusz handed him his phone before going to the kitchen to prepare some food. His mind was racing.

He had to make several important decisions. First, he would find a lawyer. Second, he would hire a private detective to uncover the whole truth. Third, he would find his ex-wife and demand answers.

But above all, he had to take care of Zuzanna. She would probably need psychological support after everything she had been through. “Mr. Janusz,” Łukasz came into the kitchen.

“My grandmother wants to talk to you. ”

Janusz took the phone. “Hello, good evening. ”

“I’m Grażyna, Łukasz’s grandmother.

He told me what happened. Are you sure about your offer, sir? ”

“Absolutely, Grandma Grażyna. Łukasz saved my life today.

It’s the least I can do. ”

“But we are simple people, sir. We don’t want to be a burden. ”

“You won’t be a burden at all.

In fact, you’ll help me a lot. My daughter will need tenderness and attention, and I have to work to support the family. ”

“In that case, I agree. When can we move in?

“Whenever you want. Even tomorrow, if possible. ”

After hanging up, Janusz looked at Łukasz. “Your grandmother agreed.

“Thank you, Mr. Janusz. You’re changing our lives. ”

“You changed mine.

That night, Janusz couldn’t sleep. He sat in an armchair by the bed, watching Zuzanna breathe. It still seemed unreal that she was there, alive and safe. In the morning, she woke up frightened, as if everything had been a dream.

“Dad, I’m here, sweetheart. Can I stay with you now? ”

“Forever, my daughter. We’ll never be apart again.

“And Mom? ”

Janusz hesitated. How could he explain to an eight-year-old girl that her own mother had abandoned her? “Mom made some bad choices, but what matters is that you’re with me now.

“Doesn’t she love me anymore? ”

“I don’t know, sweetheart. But I love you very much, and I always will. ”

Zuzanna nodded and nestled into her father’s arms.

Janusz knew he had a lot of work ahead to rebuild his daughter’s trust and sense of security. Later that same morning, Łukasz arrived with his grandmother, Grandma Grażyna, a short, smiling seventy-year-old woman. “Very nice to meet you, Mr. Janusz.

Thank you for taking us into your home. ”

“The pleasure is mine, Grandma Grażyna. The house became very empty after I thought I lost my daughter. ”

Zuzanna hid behind her father when she saw the guests.

“Zuzanna, these are our new friends. This is Łukasz, who helped me find you. And this is Grandma Grażyna. ”

Łukasz crouched down to the girl’s level.

“Hi, Zuzanna. Do you remember me? ” She shook her head. “Pola and I looked for you for a long time.

Your dad cried a lot because he missed you. ”

“Is that true? ” She looked at Janusz. “It’s true, sweetheart.

Dad cried every day. ”

“I’m sorry, Dad. I didn’t want you to be sad. ”

Janusz felt tears in his eyes again.

“It’s nobody’s fault, Zuzanna. None of this was your fault. ”

Grandma Grażyna slowly approached. “What a pretty girl.

Łukasz told me you like to draw butterflies. ” Zuzanna shyly nodded. “Do you want to draw with me? I can draw butterflies too.

For the first time since he had found her, Janusz saw Zuzanna smile. The following days were days of adaptation. Zuzanna was clearly traumatized, but she slowly began to open up to her new family. Łukasz was key in this process, as he was close to her age and could communicate in ways adults couldn’t.

Janusz scheduled an appointment with a child psychologist and began investigating what had really happened two years ago. He hired Wiktor Szymański, a private detective recommended by his lawyer. Wiktor was a former policeman with experience in missing persons cases. “Mr.

Janusz, I’ll need all the details about the day your daughter supposedly died. ”

Janusz told him everything he remembered. Paulina had called hysterically, saying Zuzanna had had an accident and been taken to the hospital. When he got there, she was in intensive care.

Hours later, the doctors came out and said she hadn’t made it. “Did you see the body? ”

“No. Paulina said it would be better to preserve my last good memories of Zuzanna.

And the funeral, the coffin was closed. Paulina arranged everything. I was in shock. I let her handle all the details.

“Are you sure there was a body in the coffin? ”

Janusz felt a chill. “No. I never thought about it.

How did she manage to fake the situation at the hospital? ”

“We’ll find out. I need the names of all the doctors and nurses involved. ”

Janusz provided all the information he had.

Wiktor promised to begin the investigation immediately. Two days later, Wiktor called with the first findings. “Mr. Janusz, I found something interesting.

The doctor who signed the death certificate, Dr. Sergiusz Nowak, was fired from the hospital three months after your daughter’s case. Irregularities in documentation, suspicions of falsifying reports. ”

“Did you manage to talk to him?

“Not yet, but I’ve located where he works now. It’s a private clinic in the southern part of the city. And one of the nurses, Lidia Wróbel, resigned at the same time. I have her address.

“When can we talk to them? ”

“Tomorrow, if you want. ”

The next morning, Janusz and Wiktor went to Lidia Wróbel’s house. It was a simple residence in a neighborhood on the outskirts of the city.

Lidia, a woman of about forty, opened the door with the look of someone who hadn’t slept well in a long time. “Lidia Wróbel? ” Wiktor asked. “Yes.

What do you want? ”

“We’re investigators. We’re looking into irregularities at the Sacred Heart Hospital related to cases from two years ago. ”

The woman paled.

“I have nothing to say. ”

“Lidia,” Janusz stepped closer. “My name is Janusz Wiśniewski. You took care of my daughter Zuzanna on the day she supposedly died.

“I don’t remember. ”

“Please. ” Janusz took a photo of Zuzanna from his pocket. “We just want to understand what happened.

My daughter is alive. We found her a week ago. ”

Lidia looked at the photo and began to tremble. “Alive?

“Yes. Please, tell me what happened that day. ”

Lidia looked around as if checking that no one was watching them. “Come in quickly.

They entered a simple living room. Lidia offered coffee and sat down in an old armchair. “I knew this day would come,” she said with a deep sigh. “What happened, Lidia?

“Dr. Sergiusz approached me that morning. He said I would earn five thousand zloty if I helped him with a special case. ”

“Special?

“He said a mother was desperate to hide her daughter from an aggressive ex-husband, and the only way was to pretend the girl had died. ”

“And you believed him? ”

“Yes. He showed me photos of an injured woman.

He said the ex-husband would keep beating her and the daughter if they didn’t do something drastic. ”

“What photos? ”

“Photos of Paulina with bruises on her face and arms. ”

Janusz felt the blood freeze in his veins.

Paulina always knew he would never raise a hand to her or Zuzanna. The photos were fake. “And what was your role? ”

“I was to confirm Dr.

Sergiusz’s story when you arrived at the hospital. To say the girl had serious injuries and didn’t survive. But there was no girl. ”

“No.

“Paulina brought Zuzanna to the hospital, but they left through the back door while you were coming in the front. Then Dr. Sergiusz faked all the documents. The death certificate, the medical report, everything.

The coffin at the funeral was empty. ”

Janusz felt like vomiting. Two years of his life wasted by such an elaborately planned lie. “Why are you telling me this now?

“Because I can’t live with this guilt anymore. And because if the girl is alive, she deserves to be with her real father. ”

“Do you know where I can find Dr. Sergiusz?

“He works at the Odrodzenie clinic in Parkowa district. ”

Wiktor noted all the information. “Lidia, would you have the courage to repeat this in an official statement, if it helps bring justice? ”

“Yes.

They left Lidia’s house and went straight to the Odrodzenie clinic. Janusz was determined to hear Dr. Sergiusz’s version. The clinic was small but well-maintained.

At the reception, they asked to speak with Dr. Sergiusz Nowak. “He’s in a consultation. Do you have an appointment?

“It’s urgent,” Wiktor said, showing his detective badge. “It’s about an old case. ”

The receptionist got nervous and went to fetch the doctor. Dr.

Sergiusz appeared a few minutes later. He was a man of about fifty, graying, with rimmed glasses. “How can I help you? ”

“Dr.

Sergiusz, I need to talk to you about Zuzanna Wiśniewska,” Janusz said. The doctor froze for a few seconds, then composed himself. “I don’t know what you gentlemen are talking about. ”

Wiktor stepped closer.

“We already spoke with Lidia Wróbel. We know the whole scheme, Doctor. ”

Sergiusz looked around, seeing that other patients were listening to the conversation. “We’ll talk in my office.

They followed the doctor into a small room at the back of the clinic. “What do you want? ”

“The truth,” Janusz said. “Why did you help my ex-wife pretend my daughter died?

“Listen, I had no choice. She said you were aggressive, that you beat her and the girl. ”

“That’s a lie. How could you know that?

“She had evidence. Photos of injuries. ”

“Fake photos. I never raised my hand to my family.

Dr. Sergiusz lowered his head. “She offered me twenty thousand zloty. I was having financial difficulties at the time.

“And it didn’t occur to you to check if the story was true? ”

“She seemed desperate. She said it was temporary, that in a few months she would bring the girl back and move to another province. But that was two years ago.

“I know. After she did it, she disappeared. She changed her phone number. I couldn’t contact her.

“Where can I find her? ”

“I have no idea. The last time I heard anything about her was a year ago. An acquaintance said she was living with a man in Kraków.

“What man? ”

“I don’t know his name. I only know he has money and doesn’t like children. ”

Janusz began to understand the situation.

Paulina had found a relationship with someone who didn’t accept Zuzanna. Instead of losing the man, she preferred to abandon her daughter. “Doctor, do you have any idea what you did? You destroyed my life for two years.

“I know. And I regret it every day. If it helps, I can sign a full confession. ”

Wiktor took a piece of paper and a pen.

“You can start writing. ”

While Dr. Sergiusz wrote his confession, Janusz called his lawyer and told him everything he had discovered. “Janusz, with these confessions you have enough material to sue both Paulina and everyone involved in this scheme.

“I want to find Paulina now and demand she explain everything to me personally. ”

“I’ll hire a detective in Kraków to locate her. ”

“Thank you, Attorney Franciszek. Call me with any news.

Janusz hung up and turned to Wiktor. “We’ve gathered enough material. More than enough. With Lidia’s and Dr.

Sergiusz’s testimonies, we can prove the whole farce. Now let’s go home and take care of Zuzanna. The rest will sort itself out gradually. ”

When they arrived home, Janusz found a scene that warmed his heart.

Zuzanna, Łukasz, and Grandma Grażyna were sitting in the living room, drawing together. Pola was sleeping at Zuzanna’s feet. “Dad! ” Zuzanna ran to hug him.

“Look what I drew. ”

It was a drawing of the new family. Janusz, Zuzanna, Łukasz, Grandma Grażyna, and Pola, all holding hands in front of a house. “It’s beautiful, sweetheart.

“Grandma Grażyna taught me to draw people, and Łukasz told me how Pola found me. ”

“And what do you think of that story? ”

“I think Pola is very smart. She’s my friend now.

Janusz looked at Łukasz and Grandma Grażyna with gratitude. In a week, they had become the family Zuzanna needed. “Grandma Grażyna, how was your day? ”

“Very good, Mr.

Janusz. Zuzanna is a very sweet girl. We talked a lot. ”

“About what?

“About life at Aunt Estera’s house. It seems she wasn’t bad, just frightened by the situation. Zuzanna told me Aunt Estera always said that soon, soon her mother would come for her. ”

“And did you want your mother to come?

Zuzanna lowered her eyes. “I wanted her to come, but I wanted you to come even more. ”

“Why, sweetheart? ”

“Because I always remembered you, Dad.

Even though Mom said you didn’t love me anymore, I knew it wasn’t true. ”

Janusz felt tears in his eyes again. “How did you know? ”

“Because when I closed my eyes, I remembered the smell of your perfume and your voice singing to me before bed.

That night, after everyone had gone to sleep, Janusz stayed on the terrace, thinking about everything that had happened. A week ago, he was a man destroyed by grief. Now he had his daughter back and a new family that loved him. But there were still unresolved matters.

Paulina had to answer for her actions. Estera too, and everyone involved in the scheme. His phone rang. It was Attorney Franciszek.

“Janusz, we managed to locate Paulina. ”

“Where is she? ”

“In Kraków. As the doctor said, she lives with a businessman named Marek Król.

We have the address. ”

“I’m going there tomorrow. ”

“Janusz, maybe it’s better to handle this through lawyers. Going personally could complicate things.

“No, Attorney Franciszek. I want to hear from her own lips why she did it. I want her to look me in the eye and explain why she abandoned our daughter. ”

“In that case, I’ll go with you, and we’ll also bring a lawyer from Kraków.

“Agreed. ”

Janusz hung up and went to the room. Zuzanna was sleeping deeply, cuddled up to Pola, who had jumped onto the bed. He kissed her gently on the forehead.

“Dad will take care of everything, sweetheart. No one will ever separate us again. ”

The next morning, Janusz explained to Zuzanna that he had to leave for one day but would return quickly. “Are you going to get Mom?

” she asked. “I’m going to talk to her. ”

“Why? ”

“I want her to apologize for the lie.

The wisdom of the eight-year-old girl surprised Janusz. “And if she doesn’t want to apologize, she can’t live with us anymore. Grandma Grażyna says family is the people who take care of each other. ”

Janusz smiled.

“Grandma Grażyna is teaching you important values. ”

“And you, Łukasz, and her take care of me, just like I take care of you. And Pola too. ”

Janusz flew to Kraków at 10:00 AM with Attorney Franciszek and Attorney Ryszard Kozłowski, a lawyer from Kraków.

Paulina’s address was in an exclusive district of Kraków, in a gated community with large houses and well-kept gardens. They stopped in front of number 412, a white two-story house with a luxury silver car in the garage. “How do we handle this? ” Attorney Ryszard asked directly.

“I want answers,” Janusz said. They rang the doorbell. A maid opened the door. “Good morning.

We’d like to speak with Paulina. ”

“Mrs. Paulina went out. She won’t be back until evening.

“It’s urgent. Can we wait? ”

“I don’t know. It’s better if you call ahead.

At that moment, a male voice came from inside the house. “Who is it, Róża? ” A man of about forty-five appeared in the doorway. Tall, with well-groomed hair, wearing expensive clothes.

“Marek Król? ” Attorney Franciszek asked. “Yes, what do you want? ”

“We’re lawyers.

We need to speak with Paulina regarding legal proceedings. ”

Marek visibly became alarmed. “What kind of proceedings? ”

“Related to the abandonment of a minor,” Attorney Ryszard said.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. ”

“We know Paulina lives here. ” Janusz stepped closer. “I’m Janusz Wiśniewski, her ex-husband and Zuzanna’s father.

Marek paled. “Paulina told me the girl… what? ”

Janusz pressed on. “Died in an accident.

That’s a lie. My daughter is alive and was abandoned by her mother two years ago. ”

Marek nervously ran his hand through his hair. “Where is Paulina now?

” Attorney Franciszek insisted. “At the shopping mall. But listen, I didn’t know anything about this. She told me she was a widow, that she lost her daughter in an accident.

I never suspected. She cried when she talked about the girl. She seemed sincere. ”

“Marek,” Attorney Ryszard stepped closer.

“Are you aware that participating in the abandonment of a person incapable of independent existence is a crime? ”

“I didn’t know. I swear I didn’t know. ”

“In that case,” Janusz took out a photo of Zuzanna from his pocket, “would you mind if my daughter lived here with her mother?

Marek looked at the photo, and his expression completely changed. “Listen. I can’t… I mean, I don’t have the conditions to take care of a child. ”

“So you don’t accept children in your home?

“That’s not it. Our life here is very busy. We travel a lot for business. It wouldn’t be good for the child.

Janusz understood everything. Marek didn’t accept children, and Paulina had chosen the relationship over her daughter. “Which shopping mall is she at? ”

“North Shopping Mall.

But listen, when she comes back, I’ll tell her everything. This situation has to be resolved. ”

“We’ll go find her at the mall,” Attorney Franciszek said. They went to North Shopping Mall.

Attorney Ryszard called some contacts and managed to locate Paulina’s car in the parking lot. “She’s here. License plate KR 9821. ”

They waited near the car.

Two hours later, Paulina appeared carrying several shopping bags. When she saw them, she dropped the bags on the ground. “Janusz. ”

“Hello, Paulina.

She looked different. Hair dyed blonde, expensive clothes, jewelry. She looked like a completely new person. “What are you doing here?

“I came for answers. Answers about what? ”

“Our daughter, Zuzanna. Do you remember her?

Paulina looked at the lawyers, then back at Janusz. “I don’t understand. ”

“I found her, Paulina. I found our daughter alive, in that Estera’s house.

Paulina leaned against the car, as if her legs were about to give out. “How…? ”

“You know exactly how. Why did you do this to me?

Why did you do this to our daughter? ”

“Janusz, I… I can explain. ”

“Then explain. ”

Paulina looked around, seeing that people were starting to stop and watch the argument.

“Not here. Let’s go somewhere more private. ”

They went to the food court, to a more remote corner. “Talk,” Janusz said.

“Janusz, you don’t understand how hard it was for me after the separation. Alone, without money, taking care of Zuzanna. You barely showed up to see her. ”

“That’s a lie.

I picked her up every weekend and paid child support regularly. ”

“But it wasn’t enough. I wanted to rebuild my life. Find someone who would love me.

“And so you abandoned our daughter? ”

“It wasn’t abandonment. ” She raised her voice. “I left her with Estera temporarily.

“Temporarily? It was two years, Paulina. ”

“I was going to come back for her. When things settled down.

“What things? ”

Paulina lowered her eyes. “Marek doesn’t like children. He said he would stay with me only if I didn’t have children.

“So you chose him over our daughter. ”

“It wasn’t an easy choice. ”

“Of course it was. ” Janusz slammed his fist on the table.

“You chose money and comfort over your own daughter. ”

“You don’t understand. I was desperate. I couldn’t find a job.

I was almost evicted. Marek offered me a new life. And faking Zuzanna’s situation was part of that new life. It was the only way I could think of.

If I had just disappeared with her, you would have followed me. I needed something definitive. ”

Janusz felt sick hearing this. “Do you have any idea what you did to me?

I spent two years thinking I had lost my daughter. ”

“I’m sorry, Janusz. At the time, it seemed like the best solution. ”

“The best solution for whom?

For you? And Zuzanna, did you ever think about her? ”

“Yes. That’s why I left her with Estera.

I knew she would be well taken care of. ”

“Well taken care of? ” Janusz stood up. “She cried for you every day.

She asked why you didn’t come for her. You destroyed our daughter’s childhood. ”

Paulina began to cry. “I was going to fix everything, Janusz.

I swear. I was going to come up with some story, that she was found alive, that she lost her memory in the accident, something like that. ”

“And you thought that would work? ”

“I don’t know.

I was confused. Every day that passed made it harder to go back. ”

Attorney Franciszek spoke up. “Paulina, do you realize you’ve committed several crimes?

Falsifying documents, abandonment of a person incapable of independent existence. Fraud. ”

“I didn’t want it to be like this. ”

“But it is,” Attorney Ryszard said.

“And now you’ll have to answer for it. ”

“What do you want from me? ”

Janusz took a deep breath. “I want you to come with me to see our daughter.

I want you to look her in the eye and apologize. And then I want you to sign a final surrender of parental rights. ”

“What? ”

“You don’t deserve to be her mother.

You will sign a document surrendering all maternal rights. ”

“Janusz, she’s my daughter too. ”

“She was your daughter. You gave her up when you abandoned her.

“I can’t do this. ”

“You can, and you will. Because if you don’t, I will sue you for all the crimes you committed. You will spend years in prison.

Paulina looked at the lawyers, seeking some support. “Paulina,” Attorney Ryszard said. “Janusz is being generous. With the evidence he has, you would undoubtedly be convicted.

But if you sign this document, at least you’ll be free from criminal prosecution. ”

“Yes,” Attorney Franciszek said. “But you’ll have to reimburse all the costs Janusz incurred for the investigation and lawyers. ”

“How much?

“About fifty thousand zloty so far. ”

Paulina paled. “I don’t have that money. ”

“Marek does,” Janusz said.

“He’s the one who benefited from this whole situation. ”

They returned to Marek’s house, who panicked when he learned the details. “Paulina, how could you deceive me like this? ”

“Marek, I’m sorry.

I was desperate. ”

“And now I could be sued for complicity too. ”

“Only if you don’t cooperate,” Attorney Ryszard said. “If you pay the compensation and help resolve the situation, you won’t have problems.

“How much? ”

“Fifty thousand zloty. ”

Marek did some mental calculations. “Fine.

But after this, Paulina, you’re out of my house. ”

“What? ”

“You deceived me. I want nothing to do with you.

Janusz almost felt pity for Paulina. She was losing everything. Her daughter, her relationship, her comfortable life. But he quickly remembered Zuzanna crying in Estera’s house, asking why her father hadn’t come for her.

“Paulina, are you coming with us? Or do you prefer I go get Zuzanna alone? ”

“I’ll come with you. ”

The return trip was tense.

Paulina cried during the entire flight. Janusz felt no sympathy. When they arrived home, it was almost evening. Zuzanna was in the living room playing with Łukasz when she saw them come in.

“Dad! ” She ran to hug him. Then she saw Paulina and stopped, confused. “Mom?

“Hello, sweetheart. ” Paulina knelt to Zuzanna’s level. “How are you? ”

“I’m fine.

Why did you leave me at Aunt Estera’s house? ”

Paulina looked at Janusz, then back at her daughter. “Mom did something very bad, Zuzanna, and she came here to apologize. ”

“Don’t you love me anymore?

“I love you, sweetheart. I will always love you. But your dad takes care of you better than I can. ”

Zuzanna looked confused at both of them.

“But now we can all live together. ”

Janusz knelt next to Paulina. “Zuzanna, Mom will live far away, but you’ll stay here with me. With Łukasz and Grandma Grażyna.

Forever. ”

Zuzanna looked at Paulina. “Will you visit me? ”

Paulina looked at Janusz, who shook his head.

“Maybe when you’re older, we can see each other again. ”

“Okay,” Zuzanna said. She seemed to accept the situation with impressive maturity. Paulina hugged her for a few minutes, crying.

“Forgive me, sweetheart. Forgive me for everything. ”

After dinner, when Zuzanna was playing with Łukasz, Janusz and Paulina signed all the documents. She officially surrendered all maternal rights.

“Janusz,” she said before leaving. “Take good care of her. ”

“I always took care of her. The problem is you never saw it.

“I know I did everything wrong. If I could turn back time…”

“You can’t. And now it’s too late. ”

Paulina left the house and Janusz’s and Zuzanna’s lives forever.

That night, after everyone had gone to sleep, Janusz stayed on the terrace, reflecting on everything that had happened in two weeks. His life had completely changed. Łukasz approached. “Mr.

Janusz, can I ask you a question? ”

“Of course, Łukasz. ”

“How can you forgive Paulina? ”

“Who said I forgave her?

“But you weren’t angry with her in front of Zuzanna. ”

Janusz smiled. The boy was very perceptive. “Łukasz, there are things you do for children.

Showing hatred toward Zuzanna’s mother wouldn’t be good for her. ”

“I understand. You’re a very good father. ”

“I’m learning to be better every day.

“And can I still call you Mr. Janusz? ”

“What do you say you just call me Dad? ”

Łukasz smiled broadly.

“Dad? ”

“Yes, you’re my son now, Łukasz. ”

“And I’m Zuzanna’s brother. ”

“Yes, you’re brothers.

Łukasz hugged him. “Thank you for saving our family. ”

“You saved mine. ”

In the following months, the new family adapted perfectly.

Zuzanna started therapy and gradually overcame her trauma. Łukasz enrolled in a better school and began dreaming of becoming a veterinarian to help more animals like Pola. Grandma Grażyna became the grandmother Zuzanna never had. She taught her to cook, told her stories, and gave her life advice.

Janusz smiled sincerely again for the first time in two years. His business thrived, and he had energy to work, knowing he would come home to love and tenderness. Pola officially became the family dog and continued to help other people find missing family members, always accompanied by Łukasz. A year later, Janusz organized a party to celebrate Zuzanna’s rebirth.

He invited all the friends, neighbors, and people who had helped them. Lidia, the nurse, attended and personally apologized to Zuzanna. Dr. Sergiusz also came, becoming an ally in the fight against medical document falsification.

Estera, the woman who had taken care of Zuzanna, was also invited. She had become something of an aunt to the girl, visiting her regularly. “Dad,” Zuzanna said during the party, “can I make a speech? ”

“Of course, sweetheart.

Zuzanna climbed onto a chair and asked everyone for attention. “I wanted to thank everyone who helped me, especially Łukasz and Pola, who found me, and Dad, who never gave up, and Grandma Grażyna, who teaches me important things every day. ”

Everyone applauded emotionally. “And I wanted to say that I learned something important.

Family isn’t just the people who share the same blood. Family is the people who truly love us. ”

Janusz felt tears come to his eyes. His daughter had become a wise and strong girl despite everything she had been through.

That evening, after the guests had left, the family gathered in the living room. “Łukasz,” Janusz said, “do you remember how you looked for me at the cemetery? ”

“I remember. ”

“What made you sure Zuzanna was alive?

“Pola. Dad, she never makes mistakes. But there was also something in my heart that said Zuzanna needed help. ”

“And Grandma Grażyna, didn’t it seem strange to you when Łukasz came home saying he would live in a big house with a businessman?

“I thought I was dreaming,” she laughed. “But when I met you, I saw you were a man with a good heart. And we always knew Łukasz had a special gift for helping people. ”

“What gift, Grandma?

” Zuzanna asked. “The gift of the heart, my dear. Some people are born with such a big heart that they can’t watch suffering without wanting to help. ”

“I want to have that gift too,” Zuzanna said.

“You already have it, sweetheart,” Janusz said. “You forgave your mother even after everything she did. That’s having a big heart. ”

“And can I help Łukasz and Pola find other people when I grow up a little?

“Yes. ”

“Great. We’ll be a family of heroes. ”

Everyone laughed at Zuzanna’s innocence.

Years later, Łukasz turned fifteen and received a motorcycle as a gift to help with searches. Zuzanna, now ten, already accompanied some of the simpler investigations. Janusz founded a foundation to help families going through the same situation he had. The Zuzanna Foundation had already reunited dozens of families.

Pola became famous in the region and received many awards for her work. Łukasz became something of a children’s consultant for the police in missing persons cases. Grandma Grażyna, at seventy-three, was more active than ever, coordinating the foundation’s work and taking care of all the children who came through. One morning, Janusz received a phone call that would change their lives again.

“Hello, Mr. Janusz. This is Commissioner Beata Kowalska. I have a case that I think might interest you.

“Please, go on. ”

“A twelve-year-old boy insists his fifteen-year-old sister is alive, even though she was declared missing a year ago. His story is very similar to Łukasz’s. ”

Janusz smiled.

“What’s the boy’s name? ”

“Bartek. Bartek Nowak. ”

“Please bring him to the house.

We’ll talk to him. ”

“Are you sure? ”

“Absolutely. Our family always has room for one more child.

When Bartek arrived at Janusz’s house, Łukasz immediately identified with the boy’s story. “Bartek, what’s your sister’s name? ”

“Łucja. She disappeared when she was coming home from school.

“And you’re sure she’s alive? ”

“Yes. I saw her at the market last week, but when I tried to get closer, a man took her away. ”

Zuzanna approached Bartek.

“Don’t worry. Łukasz and Pola will find your sister. They’re the best in the world at this. ”

Janusz looked at his new family and felt gratitude in his heart.

Łukasz had become a responsible and determined young man. Zuzanna was growing strong and generous. Grandma Grażyna was the grandmother all children deserved. And Pola, Pola was still saving families with her incredible nose and golden heart.

“Bartek,” Janusz said, “how about you stay here with us while we look for your sister? ”

“Really? ”

“I’m very serious. This house has always been open to those who need it.

“And if we don’t find your sister, we will,” Łukasz said with certainty. “And even if it’s late, you’ll have a family here. ”

“But I don’t want a new family. I want my sister.

“And you’ll have your sister,” Zuzanna said. “But you’ll also have our family. A person can have several families. ”

Bartek smiled for the first time since he had arrived.

That night during dinner, Janusz raised a toast. “To our family, which keeps growing, and to all the families we will still unite. ”

“To family! ” they all shouted together.

Pola barked in approval, as if she perfectly understood what was happening. Three weeks later, Pola found Łucja in an abandoned house on the outskirts of the city. She had been held by a couple who forced her to work as a servant in exchange for food. The reunion between Bartek and Łucja was moving.

The siblings cried together for hours while the whole family comforted them. “Janusz,” Łucja said when she calmed down. “Bartek told me you took care of him during the search. ”

“That’s right.

And we’ll take care of both of you, if you want. ”

“How? ”

“Do you have somewhere to live? ”

“We lived with our aunt, but she… she drank a lot and beat us.

That’s why I ran away from home, and Bartek ran after me, but we got separated. ”

Janusz looked at Grandma Grażyna, who nodded. “How about you stay here with us, at least until you get organized? ”

“But there are a lot of us.

We won’t be a bother. ”

“Never,” Zuzanna said. “The more people in the family, the merrier. ”

“She’s right,” Łukasz said.

“I came here alone, and now I have a dad, a sister, a grandmother, and even a dog. ”

Łucja and Bartek agreed to stay. In the following months, Janusz’s house officially became a temporary home for children in difficult situations. He legalized the situation and converted part of the house into a kind of shelter.

Grandma Grażyna, now with the official title of Grandma of the House, coordinated the daily life of all the children. Łukasz and Zuzanna helped the younger ones with their lessons. Pola, well, Pola still found people. Janusz never imagined his life would turn out this way.

From a successful but lonely businessman, he had become the father of a large and happy family. One afternoon, he heard a familiar voice. “Mr. Janusz!

” He turned and saw a young woman of about twenty in the doorway. “Yes? ”

“My name is Gabriela. Gabriela Kowalska.

I heard you help find missing people. ”

Janusz invited her inside. Something about her name sounded familiar. “How can I help?

“I’m looking for my younger brother. His name is Łukasz. ”

Janusz felt his heart race. “Łukasz?

Łukasz appeared in the living room doorway, hearing the conversation. “Gabriela? ”

The siblings ran to each other and hugged, crying. “Łukasz, my brother, I looked for you everywhere.

“Gabriela, I knew you were alive. I knew it. ”

Janusz watched the scene, moved. The circle was closing.

“Where have you been all this time? ” Łukasz asked his sister. “I found work in a city inland. I lived there for two years, saving money to come back to Kraków and find you.

“And why did you run away from home? ”

“Our mother’s boyfriend beat me. I ran away to protect myself, but I never wanted to leave you. ”

“It’s okay, Gabriela.

We’re together now. ”

Gabriela looked around and saw all the children watching. “Łukasz, what is this place? ”

“It’s our home.

Dad Janusz takes care of us. ”

“Dad Janusz? ”

Łukasz looked at Janusz with tenderness. “He adopted me when I was alone.

He gave me a family. ”

Gabriela seemed worried. “Will he let me stay too? ”

“Gabriela,” Janusz said.

“The person who trained Łukasz to be so good and generous will always find a place in our family. ”

“How do you mean? ”

“Łukasz told me it was you who taught him to help other people. That you said when you have a gift, you have to use it to do good.

Gabriela smiled through her tears. “He remembered. ”

“I remember everything you taught me, Gabriela. And I use it every day.

“Gabriela,” Zuzanna said, approaching. “You’ll be my sister too. ”

“If you accept me, of course. ”

“Of course we accept you!

” all the children shouted in chorus. Grandma Grażyna approached and hugged Gabriela. “Welcome to the family, my dear. ”

That night during dinner, Janusz looked around the large table he had made to accommodate the whole family.

There were now twelve of them. Him, Zuzanna, Łukasz, Gabriela, Grandma Grażyna, Łucja, Bartek, and five other children who had arrived in recent months. “Children,” he said, “I want to announce something. ” Everyone stopped eating and looked at him.

“I’ve decided to officially adopt all the children in the house. You will legally be my children. ”

Silence lasted a few seconds. Then the table erupted in joyful shouts and applause.

“Really, Dad? ” Łukasz asked. “I’m very serious. I already spoke with the attorney.

It’s just a matter of formalities. ”

“Oh, can we choose our last name? ” one of the youngest children asked. “What do you mean?

“Can I also be called Zuzanna Wiśniewska? ”

Janusz looked at Zuzanna, who nodded enthusiastically. “Of course, you’ll all be Wiśniewskis. ”

“Łukasz Wiśniewski!

” Łukasz shouted. “Gabriela Wiśniewska, Łucja Wiśniewska, Bartek Wiśniewski. ” Everyone euphorically shouted their new names. “And Pola?

” Zuzanna asked. “Will she also be Pola Wiśniewska? ”

Janusz laughed. “Pola is part of the family too.

” Pola barked, as if approving the decision. Years later, the Zuzanna Foundation had grown exponentially. Janusz left his original company and devoted himself full-time to social work. The main house had been expanded and could now accommodate up to twenty children.

Łukasz, now seventeen, was officially a tracking dog trainer. Zuzanna, at twelve, was already handling simpler missing child cases on her own. Gabriela, at twenty-two, was studying psychology to help families going through trauma. Łucja passed the entrance exam for law.

Bartek was studying journalism to tell stories about overcoming difficulties. Grandma Grażyna, at seventy-five, was writing her memoirs with Bartek’s help. The book was to be sold to raise funds for the organization. Pola, now a nine-year-old senior, had officially retired but still accompanied the foundation’s activities.

Her three puppies, Hope, Faith, and Miracle, were now the organization’s official dogs. One morning, Janusz received a phone call that surprised him. “Hello, Mr. Janusz.

It’s Paulina. Do you remember me? ”

Janusz thought for a few seconds. He hadn’t spoken to his ex-wife in three years.

“What do you want, Paulina? ”

“I want… I want to talk to you and Zuzanna. ”

“No. ”

“Please, Janusz.

I know I don’t deserve it, but I really need it. ”

“Need what? ”

“Forgiveness. ”

Janusz hesitated.

Zuzanna always asked about her mother, especially when she saw other children with their biological families. “Where are you? ”

“In Gdańsk. I’m… going through a difficult time.

“What kind? ”

“Marek left me. He found out I lied about other things too. I’m alone and sick.

“Sick with what? ”

“Stomach cancer. The doctors say I don’t have much time left. ”

Janusz felt a mix of compassion and anger.

“What exactly do you want? ”

“I want to apologize to Zuzanna and you. I want to make peace before I go. ”

“Paulina, this could confuse Zuzanna.

“Please, Janusz. It’s the last favor I’ll ever ask of you. ”

Janusz thought about Zuzanna, who despite everything always asked if her mother was okay. “I’ll talk to her.

If she wants to see you, you can come here. ”

“Thank you, Janusz. ”

That night, Janusz talked to Zuzanna about the phone call from her mother. “She’s sick?

” the girl asked, concerned. “Yes, seriously ill. ”

“And she wants to see me? ”

“Yes.

She wants to apologize in person. ”

Zuzanna thought for a few minutes. “Dad, Grandma Grażyna always says you have to forgive people so you don’t carry a weight in your heart. ”

“That’s true.

“So I want to see Mom. But you stay with me. ”

“I’ll always be with you, sweetheart. ”

The following Sunday, Paulina appeared at the door of the house.

Janusz barely recognized her. She was very thin, with graying hair, in simple clothes. “Hello, Janusz. ”

“Hello, Paulina.

Come in. ”

Zuzanna was in the living room, nervous. When she saw her mother, she ran to hug her. “Mom!

“My beautiful little girl,” Paulina cried. “How you’ve grown. ”

“You’re very thin, Mom. Do you eat well?

Zuzanna’s innocence touched Janusz’s heart. They talked for hours. Paulina apologized many times and explained that she now understood how wrong she had been. “Zuzanna, will you forgive me for abandoning you?

“I forgive you, Mom. But do you promise you won’t do it again? ”

“I promise, sweetheart. But Mom might have to leave soon.

“Where to? ”

Janusz intervened. “Zuzanna, Mom is very sick. It might happen that she… that she soon goes to heaven.

Zuzanna immediately understood. Her eyes filled with tears. “Mom will go like Grandpa did. ”

“Maybe, sweetheart.

“In that case, I want Mom to stay here with us until she goes. We’ll take good care of her. ”

Janusz looked at Paulina, who was crying profusely. “Paulina, do you want to stay here?

We have a small guest room. ”

“You would do this for me? After everything I did? ”

“Zuzanna wants you to stay.

I won’t deny that to my daughter. ”

“Thank you, Janusz. Thank you. ”

The last three months of Paulina’s life were the most important in Zuzanna’s life.

She finally got to know her real mother without lies and agendas. Paulina rehabilitated herself by taking care of the other children in the house when her health allowed. She told stories, helped with lessons, and shared her life experience. Łukasz and she had several conversations about forgiveness and second chances.

Gabriela helped her process her guilt. Grandma Grażyna accepted her like a daughter. When Paulina passed away, she was surrounded by love and forgiveness. Zuzanna was by her side, holding her hand.

“Mom, I love you. ”

“I love you too, my angel. I always loved you. That’s why it hurt so much when I hurt you.

“It didn’t hurt, Mom, because in the end everything turned out fine. I got my dad back, I gained a big family, and I got you back. ”

“You’re a very wise girl, Zuzanna. ”

“Grandma Grażyna taught me that people make mistakes because they suffer inside, and that you have to help them stop suffering.

“Your Grandma Grażyna is very wise. ”

“Mom, when you get to heaven, tell Grandpa I hug him tightly. ”

“Of course, sweetheart. ”

Paulina closed her eyes for the last time, holding her daughter’s hand, the daughter she had abandoned and regained.

The funeral was simple but full of love. The whole family was present, including the children from the foundation and the people Paulina had helped in her final months. Zuzanna gave a moving speech. “My mother made many mistakes in life, but she got one thing right.

She gave me life. And it was that life that brought me to my dad, to my family, to all of you. That’s why I’m grateful for everything that happened. ”

After the funeral, life in the Wiśniewski house returned to normal, but there was a different peace in the air, as if all the wounds had finally healed.

Janusz, now forty-eight, looked at his life and felt immense gratitude. From a lonely and bitter man, he had become the father of dozens of children and the founder of an organization that had reunited hundreds of families. Łukasz, just before turning eighteen, decided to study veterinary medicine with a specialization in training rescue animals. Zuzanna, at thirteen, was already talking about following in her brother’s footsteps.

Gabriela finished psychology and opened a practice right in the foundation. Łucja passed her law entrance exams. Bartek was studying journalism. Grandma Grażyna, at seventy-six, was writing her memoirs with Bartek’s help.

The book was to be sold to raise funds for the organization. Pola, now a nine-year-old senior, had officially retired but still accompanied the foundation’s activities. Her three puppies, Hope, Faith, and Miracle, were now the organization’s official dogs. One afternoon, while watching all the children playing in the yard, Janusz received a special visit.

“Mr. Janusz! ” a familiar voice called. He turned and saw Estera, the woman who had taken care of Zuzanna for two years.

“Estera, what a pleasant surprise. ”

“I brought something for you,” she said, holding a box. “What is it? ”

“Some of Zuzanna’s things that stayed at my house.

Drawings, some clothes, a doll. ”

Janusz called Zuzanna, who ran to hug Estera. “Aunt Estera, it’s been so long! ”

“Hello, sweetheart.

I brought you some memories. ”

Zuzanna opened the box and found drawings she had made at age six, a doll she hadn’t seen in years, and some clothes. “Dad, look,” she said, showing a drawing. “This is how I drew our family when I was at Aunt Estera’s house.

Janusz looked at the drawing. It was a tall man in a suit next to a little girl. Below it was written in crooked letters: “Me and Dad. ”

“You always drew me, even when you thought I wasn’t coming for you.

“Always, Dad, because in my heart I knew you loved me. ”

Janusz, moved, hugged his daughter. “Estera, thank you for taking such good care of her. ”

“Thank you for forgiving me, Mr.

Janusz, and for letting me be part of your life. ”

“You’ll always be part of our family, Aunt Estera. ”

That night during dinner, Janusz announced something special. “Listen, everyone, I have news for you.

“What news, Dad? ” Łukasz asked. “The Zuzanna Foundation has been invited to expand its operations to other provinces. We’ll be able to help even more families.

“That’s amazing! ” Łucja shouted. “And there’s more,” Janusz continued. “I’ve decided it’s time for you to take on responsibility.

Łukasz will coordinate the animal training sector. Gabriela will lead the psychological department. Łucja will head the legal department when she finishes her studies. ”

“And me, Dad?

” Zuzanna asked. “You’ll be our director of child relations. No one understands better what they’re going through than you. ”

“And Grandma Grażyna?

” Bartek asked. “Grandma will be our general director of wisdom. ” Janusz smiled, because without her, none of this would have been possible. Grandma Grażyna wiped her eyes with her apron.

“You’re the best family an old woman could have. ”

“And we’re the best family we could have,” Zuzanna said, making everyone laugh. Five years later, the Zuzanna Foundation operated in twelve Polish provinces. Janusz received many national and international awards for his social work.

Łukasz, a veterinary graduate, was recognized as one of the best rescue dog trainers in the country. Zuzanna, at eighteen, was studying psychology and already coordinating the foundation with her father. Gabriela had her own practice and a boyfriend who also worked for social causes. Łucja, fresh out of law school, had already won several important cases defending abandoned children.

Bartek was a reporter for an important newspaper and wrote about social issues. Grandma Grażyna, at eighty-one, had retired but still lived in the house and received daily visits from all the grandchildren she had helped raise. Pola had passed away a year earlier, at age twelve, surrounded by love. Her puppies continued the work, and a third generation of dogs was already being trained.

The original house had become a kind of headquarters for the foundation, always full of children, families, and volunteers. One morning, Janusz was in his office when he received a phone call that moved him. “Hello, Mr. Janusz.

This is Michał. Do you remember me? ”

Janusz thought for a few seconds. “Michał, Michał from the bakery on my old block?

“Exactly, sir. I saw a report about you on TV yesterday. What pride. ”

“Thank you, Michał.

“Sir, I’m calling because my grandson went missing two weeks ago. The police can’t find him. ”

“Do you believe that…? ”

“Please give me your address.

We’ll be there today. ”

Janusz called Łukasz and Zuzanna. “Children, we have a new case. ”

“Where, Dad?

” Zuzanna asked. “On my old block. It’s Michał from the bakery. ”

“The Michał who always greeted you when you went to the cemetery?

” Łukasz asked. “The same. ”

“Then let’s go,” Zuzanna said. “He was always kind to our family.

They took Hope, the most experienced of Pola’s daughters, and went to the block. Michał received them crying. “Mr. Janusz, thank you so much for coming.

Tolek disappeared when he was playing at the playground. He’s only six years old. ”

“Where was he last seen? ”

“There, at the playground around the corner.

“Do you have any clothes of his that haven’t been washed? ”

“I have a shirt he wore the day before. ”

Hope smelled the shirt and immediately showed interest. “She found something,” Łukasz said.

“Hope, search. ”

The dog led them through several streets, stopping occasionally to sniff. After an hour, she stopped in front of an old house. “This is it,” Łukasz said.

“Hope only stops like this when she’s sure. ”

They knocked on the door. A woman answered. “Good morning, ma’am.

We’re looking for a missing boy. ”

“There’s no boy here. ”

But at that moment, a child’s voice came from inside. “Grandma, can I play in the yard?

“Tolek! ” Janusz shouted. “Tolek, it’s Grandpa Michał who sent us to find you. ”

“Grandpa Michał?

” The boy ran out. “He’s at home waiting for you, champ,” Zuzanna said, crouching down to the boy’s level. The woman tried to stop Tolek from leaving, but Łukasz gently held her back. “Ma’am, can you explain why this boy is here?

“He… he got lost on the street. I was just taking care of him for two weeks without informing the family. I didn’t know who to look for. ”

Janusz picked Tolek up.

“Are you okay, champ? ”

“Yes. Grandma Helena gave me food and let me watch TV. ”

“Why didn’t you go home?

“She said Grandpa Michał had gone away and that he would come for me when he got back. ”

Janusz looked at the woman, who lowered her eyes. “Mrs. Helena, the family has been desperately looking for him.

“I just missed having a child in the house. My grandchildren live far away. They never visit me. ”

Janusz felt compassion for the woman.

“Mrs. Helena, how about you visit our foundation? We have many children who would love to have such a loving grandmother as you. ”

“Really?

“I’m very serious. But first, we need to take Tolek back to Grandpa Michał. ”

The reunion between Michał and Tolek was moving. The old man cried with relief, hugging his grandson.

“Mr. Janusz, how can I ever…? ”

“You don’t have to thank me, Michał. We’ve been neighbors forever.

“And Mrs. Helena, what will happen to her? ”

“We’ll help her too. She just missed having family nearby.

A week later, Mrs. Helena was at the foundation, helping with the younger children and feeling useful again. Tolek visited her regularly, calling her Grandma Helena. Janusz watched all this and reflected on how life had become a chain of kindness.

A lost child had created a family. That family had multiplied into dozens of other families, and now those families were spreading love across the country. One afternoon, he was sitting on the terrace of the house, watching the children play, when Zuzanna approached. “Dad, can I ask you something?

“Always, sweetheart. ”

“Do you regret anything in your life? ”

Janusz thought for a few seconds. “No, Zuzanna.

Not even the bad moments, because they taught me to appreciate the good ones. ”

“Not even the time you were sad, thinking I was gone? ”

“Not even that, because that time made me realize how important you are to me. ”

“And do you think Mom regretted abandoning me?

“I think so. In her last months here, I saw that she understood how wrong she was. ”

“Dad, sometimes I think about her and I don’t feel anger. ”

“Why?

“Because if she hadn’t done it, maybe we never would have found Łukasz. And without Łukasz, we wouldn’t have found all the other children. And Grandma Grażyna wouldn’t have a big family, and Pola wouldn’t be famous. ”

Janusz smiled at his daughter’s wisdom.

“So you think everything happened for a reason? ”

“I think so. Grandma Grażyna always says that God makes bad things good when we have faith. ”

“And do you have faith?

“Yes. Faith in our family, faith in our work, faith that we’ll help many more people. ”

Janusz hugged Zuzanna. “I have faith in you too.

“And in our family, and in our future, Dad. ”

“Yes. Thank you. ”

“For what?

“For never giving up on me. ”

“Thank you, sweetheart, for making me a better man. ”

That night, after everyone had gone to sleep, Janusz, Łukasz, and Zuzanna stayed on the terrace talking. “Dad,” Łukasz said, “sometimes I still can’t believe all this happened.

“Why, son? ”

“Because when I was a child, I thought I would die alone and sad. Now I have a huge family and a job I love. ”

“And I,” Zuzanna said, “sometimes I still dream I’m at Aunt Estera’s house, waiting for someone to come for me.

Then I wake up and see I’m here with you, and I’m happy again. ”

“Do you know what’s most amazing about all this? ” Janusz asked. “What, Dad?

“That our story is still being written. In ten years, we’ll have helped many other families. You’ll be adults, shaped people. Maybe you’ll have your own children, and the foundation will be even bigger.

“And Grandma Grażyna? ” Zuzanna asked, worried. “Grandma will be here blessing us and giving advice as always. ”

“Dad,” Łukasz said, “can I say something?

“Of course. ”

“I think my sister Gabriela taught me something very important when we were little. She said that when you have a gift, you have to use it to help other people. Today I understand that my gift wasn’t just finding missing people, but finding you and Zuzanna to create our family.

“And what’s my gift, Łukasz? ” Zuzanna asked. “Your gift is bringing peace to people who suffer. That’s why everyone who comes here feels at home quickly.

“And Dad’s gift? ”

Łukasz thought for a moment. “Dad’s gift is turning pain into love. He took the pain of losing you and turned it into love for hundreds of children.

Janusz felt tears in his eyes. “Thank you, son. That’s the greatest compliment I’ve ever received. ”

“Dad,” Zuzanna said, “could we start a tradition?

“What kind of tradition? ”

“Every year, on the day Łukasz found me, we could come here to the terrace and give thanks for all the good things that happened. ”

“I love that idea. ”

“We’ll call it the Wiśniewski Family Gratitude Day, and we’ll tell the story of the people we helped during the year,” Łukasz suggested.

“Perfect. Our first official tradition. ”

They stayed for a while in silence, contemplating the stars. “Dad,” Łukasz said, “do you think somewhere in heaven, Pola and Paulina are meeting?

Janusz smiled at his son’s innocence. “I think so. And I think they’re blessing us. ”

“Dad,” Zuzanna said, “can I confess something?

“Always, sweetheart. ”

“Sometimes I miss Mom. Not the Mom who abandoned me, but the Mom who stayed here taking care of the children in her last months. ”

“It’s normal to miss her, Zuzanna.

It means you have a good heart. ”

“Do you miss her? ”

“I miss the person she became at the end. The person who regretted and tried to fix her mistakes.

“Łukasz,” Zuzanna said, “do you miss your life before you met us? ”

Łukasz thought for a moment. “I miss the hope I had that I would find my sister Gabriela. But I don’t miss being alone.

You gave me a family much better than I could have dreamed of. ”

Janusz looked at his two children and felt deep peace in his heart. “Do you know what I’m most proud of in you? ”

“What?

” they asked together. “That despite everything you’ve been through, you became generous and loving people. That shows you have enormous inner strength. ”

“We learned that from you, Dad,” Łukasz said.

“And from Grandma Grażyna,” Zuzanna added. “No, my children. You already had it in you. I just helped it bloom.

That night, when they finally went to sleep, Janusz walked through the rooms, checking that all the children were okay. In Zuzanna’s room, she was sleeping, cuddled up to one of Pola’s puppies. In Łukasz’s room, he was still studying, preparing for a dog training congress. In Grandma Grażyna’s room, she was sleeping with a smile on her face.

Janusz went to his room and, before sleeping, opened the drawer of his nightstand. Inside, he kept the first photo Łukasz had taken of the reunited family on the day they found Zuzanna. In the photo, everyone was happy but still wary, as if they didn’t believe it was real. Now, ten years later, that wariness had turned into certainty.

They were truly a family. Janusz put the photo back in the drawer and lay down to sleep. Before falling asleep, he said a silent prayer. “Thank you for giving me a second chance to be a father.

Thank you for showing me that family is those we choose to love. And thank you for teaching me that even the greatest tragedy can transform into the greatest blessing. ”

The next morning, Janusz woke up to the sound of laughter coming from the kitchen. He went downstairs and found the whole family preparing a special breakfast.

“Surprise, Dad! ” they all shouted when they saw him. “What’s the surprise? ”

“We decided to celebrate the first Gratitude Day with a special breakfast,” Gabriela explained.

“But Gratitude Day is tomorrow. ”

“We couldn’t wait,” Zuzanna said, laughing. “We were too impatient to start the tradition. ”

Janusz looked around the abundant table and the gathered family.

Pola’s granddaughter, the third generation, lay at his feet. Grandma Grażyna was arranging plates with the help of the youngest children. Łukasz and Gabriela were talking about a new foundation project. Łucja and Bartek were planning an awareness campaign.

And Zuzanna, his lost and found little girl, was coordinating everything with the most beautiful smile in the world. “Everyone,” Janusz said, moved. “Can I say something? ”

“Of course, Dad.

“If I had to live everything all over again, I would live it exactly the same way. Because every moment of pain led me here. And here is the happiest place in the world. ”

“Dad,” Łukasz said, “we prepared a surprise for you.

“Another surprise? ”

“It’s a song Zuzanna composed. She wants to sing it for you. ”

Zuzanna blushed with embarrassment.

“It’s nothing special. Just a simple song. ”

“Sing it, sweetheart. ”

Zuzanna cleared her throat and began to sing in her sweet voice.

“There once was a dad who lost his little girl. He cried every day, thought of her always. A boy with a good heart said, ‘Don’t cry anymore. She’s alive, little one.

’ And so our family began to grow. With great love it developed. Today there are many of us, but love didn’t divide. It multiplied, multiplied.

Family of the heart, true family, family built by love. ”

When she finished, everyone was crying with emotion. “Zuzanna, what a beautiful song,” Janusz said, hugging his daughter. “It’s our official song, Dad.

The Wiśniewski Family Song. ”

“Perfect. We are now officially a complete family. We have a home, a tradition, music, and many, many wonders.

“And a dog! ” one of the youngest children shouted. “And dogs too,” Janusz laughed.
