Erik ten Hag has called on Manchester United to produce their “best performance of the season” against Barcelona after revealing a pre-match boost from former boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
The sides meet at Old Trafford for a Europa League play-off decider on Thursday, with the tie tantalisingly poised after a thrilling 2-2 draw in Spain last week.
A crunch week concludes with a Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United at Wembley on Sunday, with Ten Hag’s side out to end a six-year trophy drought.
But the Dutchman has urged his players to first focus on hitting new heights against Xavi’s side.
“We have the opportunity (on Sunday) but the first focus point is always the next game and we can’t win the (Europa League) trophy this week,” the Manchester United manager said.
“We have to go from game and game with the focus, but especially we have to keep in the same mindset that every day we want to give a better version of ourselves.
“We are sure when you face such big teams as Barcelona you have to play your best otherwise you don’t have a chance.
“We want to get through, to go to the next round, so, really, tomorrow, really, we have to give the best performance from this season. We believe in it, we’re looking forward to it, so it gives a lot of energy.”
Ten Hag’s improving side are fighting on multiple fronts, with a first Premier League title since Ferguson retired in 2013 still possible given United are five points behind Arsenal, though the leaders have a game in hand.
The legendary former boss and the current manager were pictured having dinner this week and Ten Hag said it was invaluable to tap into the Scot’s experience.
“It’s massive,” he said of the opportunity to spend time with Ferguson. “I always enjoy to speak with people who have a lot of knowledge, a lot of experience. He wants to share it, so he wants to help, he wants to support.
“You feel Manchester United is his club. He feels so committed and he wants that we are doing well. It was a great night and I look forward to the next night with him.”
Ten Hag expects to have Harry Maguire and Antony back in his ranks for a game he is relishing.
He added: “Two great teams facing each other at Old Trafford, a massive atmosphere, a great ambience; it’s the best you can get.”
