Astronomers from the University of Cambridge and elsewhere have analyzed the spectroscopic and photometric data from three instruments (NIRSpec, NIRISS and NIRCam) on board the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope to identify galaxies at similar distances and with similar colors behind the lensing galaxy cluster SMACS J0723.3-7327. This Webb image shows members of the SMACS0723_PC protocluster: the red circles show the position of the two spectroscopically confirmed galaxies and the green circles are at the position of the six other protocluster members candidates. Carbon monoxide is ultra-bright and extremely common in protoplanetary disks, making it a prime target for astronomers. But a huge chunk of carbon monoxide is missing in all observations of such disks, if the current predictions of its abundance are correct. According to new research led by the Harvard & Smithsonian’s Center for Astrophysics, carbon monoxide has been hiding in ice formations within the protoplanetary disks. Astronomers using NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and the SPIRou spectropolarimeter on the 3.6-m Canada-France-Hawaii telescope have discovered a temperate super-Earth exoplanet orbiting a red dwarf in the binary system TOI-1452. An artistic rendition of the super-Earth TOI-1452b. Image credit: Benoit Gougeon, Université de Montréal. The TOI-1452 binary system resides about 100 light-years away in the constellation of Draco. Also known as TIC 420112589 or 2MASS J19204172+7311434, it consists of two M-dwarf (red dwarf) stars. The two stars orbit each other once every 1,400 years and are separated by a small distance — 97 AU (astronomical units), or about 2.5 times the distance between the Sun and…

Pictures of a large Western Aᴜsᴛʀᴀʟɪᴀn lizard chowing down on a ᴘᴏɪsᴏɴᴏᴜs tiger snake have surfaced in the state’s South West. Although this ᴘᴏɪsᴏɴᴏᴜs snake is capable of ᴋɪʟʟing an adult human with a single Bɪᴛᴇ, it cannot compete with this hungry lizard. While traveling north of Walpole, Department of Parks and Wildlife officer Janine Liddelow observed a southern heath monitor eating soᴍᴇᴛʜing. She said that the first thing she did was try to avoid running it down. She realized it was a tiger snake when she saw it writhing about in its mouth. A particularly unfortunate tiger snake made…

As if weaving a friendship bracelet of death, two of the world’s most dangerous snakes, black mambas, can be seen twisting around each other during a rarely videotaped battle in South Africa. The action was recorded by Kirstie Bowers of Johannesburg, South Africa, while she was on safari in Pilanesberg National Park in the country’s North West Province. “That’s a really nice video,” says Kenneth Krysko, the collection manager of the herpetology division at the Florida Museum of Natural History. “It really shows two males in a classic combat behavior, with each trying to make the other one submit.” The snakes will sometimes bite each…

Although hippos are regarded as the most hazardous animals in Africa, a group of roughly 30 bold turtles attempted to transform one into a huge sun lounger. Until the hippo moved, the turtles ʟᴏsᴛ their balance and fell. The massive hippo, which could have weighed up to 2.5 tons, was ambushed by a large number of much smaller pan hinged terrapins in Sᴏᴜᴛʜ Aғʀɪᴄᴀ’s Kruger National Park after taking a quick bath. The Sᴏᴜᴛʜ Aғʀɪᴄᴀn marshes and slow-moving rivers are home to a variety of water-loving reptiles that like floating near to the water’s surface or sunbathing on rock faces.…

Almost any smaller animal that a red-tailed hawk can snag with its talons will become their meal. They are a ғᴇᴀʀsome predator that pounces on animals from above, using its vantage point and speed to its advantage. Their hawk eyes help them to focus on prey since they typically perch high above or fly over an open region. They are among the sharpest birds in North America and have vision that is up to ten times as good as that of humans. One of their favorite foods is snakes, so chances are that if you’ve ever spent time in farmland…

A group of researchers stumbled upon a grisly scene during a field study in Macedonia last year: a dead nose-horned viper with a centipede’s head sticking out of its ruptured abdomen. After a post-mortem, the scientists think it’s possible that the centipede quite literally eviscerated the snake from the inside out. “All of us were astonished, as nobody has ever seen something like this,” Ljiljana Tomović, a herpetologist at the University of Belgrade, told Live Science in an email. Tomović and colleagues were tagging reptiles on May 14, 2013, on Macedonia’s Golem Grad, a 44-acre (18 hectares) island in Lake Prespa that’s crowded with thousands of tortoises, tens…
