This newborn elephant was in danger of having his trunk torn off by a crocodile, but his mother intervened to save him.
This calf was frolicking around in the shallow area of an African bush watering hole when the crocodile jumped out of the water and clamped down on his trunk.
The remainder of the herd watched in disbelief as they fought to protect the defenseless baby elephant from the ᴀᴛᴛᴀᴄᴋ by trumpeting and snorting. Despite all difficulties, the helpless baby elephant was able to repel the reptile and fall backward, forcing the distraught crocodile to retreat into the murky water.
Francois Borman, a Zɪᴍʙᴀʙᴡᴇan farmer and enthusiastic amateur photographer, captured the amazing images at the Mana Pools in Zɪᴍʙᴀʙᴡᴇ’s Zambezi Valley. Francois said that it was the last thing he expected to see! He was out in the bush for a few hours hoping for some action. When he went out with his camera, he frequently had high hopes, but this sighting exceeded all of his expectations.
A local crocodile noticed a small herd of elephants coming down to drink and took some time sizing them up before zeroing in on the young calf playing in the shallows. The newborn elephant went right in and flopped down into the shallow, muddy water, rolling and splashing around, showing that he had clearly been looking forward to the drink. It had no worries whatsoever, and it was certainly not considering any potential ᴛʜʀᴇᴀᴛs that might be present in the hazy waters, he continued.
The calf was extremely young and had not yet learned how to drink from its trunk; instead, it was drinking with its mouth while knelt on the ground. At one point, it got up and stretched its trunk into the water to test it out.
It was chaos as the crocodile suddenly flung itself upon the young elephant calf’s trunk and grabbed hold. The little calf launched a tug-of-war with the crocodile for his life after letting out a spine-tingling scream. Time seemed to stand still as the calf strained and, in a moment of unwavering will, nearly pulled the crocodile out of the water. The crocodile eventually let the calf go as the other elephants charged at it.
