CPR is essential to saving a person’s life if their heart stops beating. But can you picture how doctors would provide CPR to an elephant’s massive body? Find out by reading on!
Recently, a 10-year-old elephant and her one-month-old calf were trapped in a concrete drain in central Thailand. The duo fell into the 7-foot-deep hole due to the pouring rain and the storm’s mud.
The park contacted the veterinarians for assistance as they were concerned that the mother might scream to attract the surrounding 30-elephant herd if they tried to extract the infant.
The team member built a temporary barrier to prevent the potentially aggressive herd from interrupting.
Unfortunately, during the rescue, the mother elephant suddenly lost consciousness, scaring all who came to help them.
“It was impossible to get near the baby while the mother was nearby, so we gave her three doses of tranquilizers, but she moved towards her baby before passing out and hit her head,” said lead national park veterinarian Dr. Chananya Kanchanasarak.
The calf suckled milk while her mother fainted in the hole, giving the rescuers some time to rest.
Although the torrential rain made it challenging to approach the pair, the rescue team finally lifted them up successfully with a crane.
Three veterans jumped on the mother’s chest right after she landed on the ground, hoping she would wake up soon. Thankfully, the animal “regained consciousness after being stimulated by both me and the baby”, shared Dr. Chananya Kanchanasarak.
Staff at the park and veterinarians cleared the area to make space for the elephants to rejoin and reunite with their herd.
Many people couldn’t stop their tears when witnessing this epic rescue. “Despite the obstacles, the mother did not leave her baby’s side,” one shared.
“This experience touched our hearts and will be one of the most memorable rescues we’ve done,” another added.
The vet said that both “mother and baby are safe” and she felt grateful for the “hard work of all parties involved in the rescue.”
Do you think this is one of the most incredible missions of veterinarians? Though it’s never easy to save a life, the result is always worth their efforts, and we all admire these brave and kind-hearted people.
