SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Tiger Woods, the host of The Genesis Invitational and an 82-time PGA Tour winner, will play at Torrey Pines Golf Course next week.
The Genesis Invitational made the announcement on X, formerly Twitter, Friday morning, bringing an answer to the question that has plagued the minds of many in recent weeks about whether Woods would compete.
The announcement came just days after Woods announced his mother, Kultida, passed away at the age of 80.
Next week’s event will also mark Woods’ return to Torrey Pines where he has won the Farmers Insurance Open seven times and won the 2008 U.S. Open.
Torrey Pines was named the new venue for this year’s Genesis Invitational after several major fires erupted in Los Angeles in January. The tournament was previously scheduled to be held at The Riviera Country Club in the Pacific Palisades, one of the neighborhoods devastated by the fires.
It is also the second PGA Tour event to take place at Torrey Pines within a month, following closely behind the Farmers Insurance Open which culminated on Jan. 25.
“When we heard he had decided to commit, we’re just here for him inside the ropes and outside the ropes,” said Mike Antellini, the tournament director. “When you get the word that Tiger is coming to the field, it always elevates an already elevated event here at The Genesis Invitational and there are going to be a lot of roars that are going to return to Torrey Pines.”
The Genesis Invitational takes place next Thursday through Sunday, Feb. 13-16.
