Luffy’s Grandpa Garp recently made a grand entrance in One Piece, and it’s a clear nod of respect toward one of his grandson’s best moments.
WARNING: SPOILERS FOR ONE PIECE MANGA CHAPTER 1080
The Vice Admiral of One Piece‘s marines and grandfather of Luffy, Monkey D. Garp, recently made a grand entrance with a shocking display of power that mirrors a pivotal moment where Luffy gained his respect. Garp has been a constant source of comedic relief who is often said to be one of the strongest men to ever live. In the world of One Piece, characters like Usopp and Buggy have proven how weaker characters can still form fearsome reputations. However, Garp recently confirmed that he is not one of those characters, and that age hasn’t made his strength less impressive.
After being captured by Blackbeard in One Piece and hearing Kuzan’s detailed explanation of the Marine’s SWORD division, Captain Koby was able to escape imprisonment. However, after helping free other Fullalead prisoners and getting cornered by countless enemies, fellow members of SWORD arrived to save Koby. This includes Koby’s mentor and The Hero of Legend, Vice Admiral Garp. Much like Luffy’s grand aerial entrance into Marineford, Garp arrived on top of the enemy’s base flying in on a big ship, but with much more grace and a much more destructive landing.
Garp Likely Saw Luffy’s Entrance And Wanted To Try It Himself
After Ace had been captured and was moments away from execution, Luffy and the rest of the Impel Down escapees descended from the skies in an assault that even One Piece‘s greatest militaristic minds did not anticipate. While Luffy’s entrance wasn’t the result of any grand plan, it happened at the right time to help change the tide of the battle of Marineford, the Marine Headquarters. Garp was there to see the entire thing and took a scolding from the then-active Fleet Admiral Sengoku about his troublesome family. While it caused him much trouble, Garp respected Luffy’s actions to save Ace and even went as far as to emulate the move in One Piece, chapter 1080.
Flying Into Enemy HQ On A Battleship Is A One Piece Family Tradition
Garp was stuck in a bad situation during the Marineford Arc, not wanting Ace to die but having to keep up his duty as the Legendary Marine Hero. He grieved how Luffy and Ace became Pirates instead of Marines but wasn’t terribly shaken until Luffy arrived at Marineford. Garp’s mental struggle allowed Luffy to get past him, but at the end of the day, both failed to find a way to save Ace and grieved in very different ways. It wouldn’t be until years later that the Vice Admiral finally had a way to make up for the loss of his adopted grandson by saving his protégé, Koby, as Luffy tried to save his brother.
The Straw Hat crew learned that Garp was their captain’s Grandfather after Robin’s rescue from Eines Lobby and the destruction of the Going Merry. As the rejuvenated crew left the island on their new ship, Garp launched several cannonballs with his bare hands in an attempt to end Luffy’s journey. However, using the Thousand Sunny’s air cannon to send the ship flying was another move that greatly impressed Garp and may have also contributed to the Vice Admirals’ desire to implement aerial tactics. One Piece is a series filled with dramatic entrances and extraordinary character moments, and time will tell if the series will be able to top Garp‘s entrance that Luffy inspired before it ends.
