Marvel Studios releases a new trailer for Secret Invasion hinting that the Disney+ series may be the final outing for Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.
Marvel Studios has released a new official trailer for Secret Invasion.
Earlier in the day, Marvel unveiled a new Secret Invasion poster confirming the Disney+ series’ release date and juxtaposing former S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) with a Skrull. Along with the poster came the announcement that the series’ second trailer would air during Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN. Also released on YouTube, the new trailer teases Fury’s relationship with Special Agent Sonya Falsworth (Olivia Colman), why he won’t contact the Avengers about the new Skrull threat on Earth, and — according to Fury’s own words at the end of trailer — “one last fight” for the hero.
Where Have Skrulls Appeared in the MCU?
Secret Invasion was first announced by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige back in Dec. 2020. The series draws its inspiration from the 2008 Marvel comic event of the same name written by Brian Michael Bendis and drawn by Leinil Francis Yu, in which the Skrulls — a shapeshifting alien race — invade Earth by replacing key heroes and figures. The Skrulls made their Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Captain Marvel (2019), and have appeared in the film Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) and Disney+’s WandaVision series since.
The post-credits scene of Far From Home revealed that S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) has been a Skrull for an unknown amount of time in the MCU, as has Fury, who has had the Skrull leader Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) posing as him on Earth for years while he’s been in Space. Jackson will star as Fury in Secret Invasion, while Smulders and Mendelsohn reprise their respective roles as Hill and Talos. Actors Don Cheadle and Martin Freeman will also appear in the series, reprising their MCU roles of War Machine/Col. James “Rhodey” Rhodes and former CIA agent Everett Ross, respectively.
Emilia Clarke and Others Join the MCU for Secret Invasion
During a San Diego Comic-Con panel in July 2022, Secret Invasion was listed among Marvel’s Phase 5 slate of projects, and a trailer was shown only to those in attendance. The official trailer for Secret Invasion was publicly released later in Sep. 2022, giving fans their first look at the series and MCU newcomers Colman and Emilia Clarke. While Colman will portray Agent Falsworth, Clarke’s Secret Invasion character has been revealed as the Skrull G’iah, Talos’ adult daughter previously seen as a child in Captain Marvel.
Jackson confirmed Clarke’s role, and revealed that Skrulls invade Earth in Secret Invasion because of Fury’s broken promises. “[Fury] told the Skrulls they were trying to find them a place to live,” Jackson said previously. “He promised them they were going to find them a planet or somewhere they could be. And that’s not going so well.” Led by actor Kingsley Ben-Adir’s new Skrull villain, Gravik, a group of radicalized Skrulls are now working to take the planet by force, replacing key political figures to do so.
