Real Madrid defender reacts to VAR controversy: “Not going to doubt the system”

Marco Asensio’s big moment at Spotify Camp Nou ended in heartbreak when the possibly winning goal for Real Madrid against Barcelona was ruled out for offside. Eventually, the Catalans scored a late winner to establish a 12-point lead in the league standings.

Real Madrid thought Asensio had put them back in front against LaLiga leaders Barcelona at Camp Nou before VAR intervened.

Carlo Ancelotti revealed his doubts over the decision after the game, which has snowballed into a bit of a controversy.

However, Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal opted to not side with his manager on the matter.

Speaking to COPE on VAR and the semi-automated offside system that La Liga are planning to introduce in the future for offside calls, he said:

“We are not going to doubt the system, we must abide by the decision and that’s it. The semi-automatic offside seems more objective, more reliable and faster system.”

Fuera de juego de Asensio en el Clásico de Liga.

FIFA implemented the new semi-automatic system for the first time in the Qatar 2022 World Cup and its introduction was seen as a success.

The system utilises ‘12 dedicated tracking cameras mounted underneath the roof of the stadium to track the ball and up to 29 data points of each individual player, 50 times per second, calculating their exact position on the pitch,’ as claimed on FIFA’s official website.

The implementation of that system could go a long way in erasing any and all scepticism that teams may have with regard to offside calls moving forward.

The 91st-minute winner conceded by Los Blancos came on Caravajal’s flank as Alejandro Balde steamed into open space after Lewandowski’s pass before laying a perfect cross for Franck Kessie.

Needless to say, there should be some concern in the club offices over the ageing right-back department, especially after Sunday’s result.
