Roy Keane insists Man United winger Antony ‘will learn the hard way’ if he continues ‘trying to make a fool’ out of his opponents… and warns that the Brazilian will get ‘targeted’ by other teams for his skills
Manchester United star Antony has been warned that he will ‘learn the hard way’ if he carries on ‘trying to make a fool’ of opponents, by club legend Roy Keane.
The Brazilian winger has not been afraid to show off his expressive attitude on the football pitch since joining the Red Devils from Ajax in the summer.
However, not everyone is a fan of Antony’s skill-set and former United midfielder Roy Keane has now said that it’s resulted in the winger being ‘targeted’ by opponents.
Speaking to ITV Sport before United’s FA Cup clash with West Ham, Keane said: ‘I think he will have to learn the hard way.
‘Players have targeted him – we saw that at the weekend, where he is trying to make a fool of people and players have tried to go through the back of him, so he will have to learn quickly otherwise he will pick up more injuries.’
Man United star Antony has been told his skills have meant that opposition players ‘target’ him
The Brazilian winger produced an average cameo during United’s 3-1 win over their Premier League opponents before being substituted in the 58th minute.
United had trailed the match 1-0 before Antony’s removal, and the Red Devils went on to score three goals in quick succession to book a place in the quarter-finals.
In January, the winger was mocked by United fans after he slipped while attempting a piece of skill in their 3-1 FA Cup win over Reading.
In October last year, Antony performed his trademark 720-degree spin during United’s 3-0 win over Sheriff Tiraspol – which resulted in a heap of backlash towards the winger.
United club legend, Paul Scholes, ripped into the forward after the game: ‘Does that do anything for anybody? Does that do anything for himself? I’d have to ask him – even at 4-0 up what does that do for you?’
Despite his hefty price tag, Antony has found the net just six times in 26 games for the Red Devils this season, and has been previously criticised for looking predictable and one-footed.
The 23-year-old completed a lucrative £82 million move to United in the summer as former Ajax coach Erik ten Hag looked to reunite with the forward.
He also made four appearances in the World Cup, out of Brazil’s five games, but failed to get on the scoresheet in any of them.
