Despite having a rare genetic disorder, this woman loves the deformed dog so much and gives him a happy life, despite the fact that adopters avoid him because they think he’s ugly.
Every dog is beautiful. No matter if they have unique needs, long-lasting scars, or unusual traits, they are still magnificent animals who should be appreciated. At a shelter, one dog by the name of Walter was forgotten and left behind. The reasons the dog was frequently disregarded broke the heart of one particular animal enthusiast. When a volunteer brought the animal lover, a woman by the name of Gabby, over to meet Walter, she was already at the shelter saving another puppy.
Hey Gabby, you’ve got to see this dog, the volunteer said. The volunteer believed Gabby would be able to help Walter find a forever home since she helped rescue dogs with unique needs. The moment Gabby set eyes on the strange dog, she realized he was anything but typical. She had never seen a dog with such a severe underbite or one that was this small. His spine and legs both displayed obvious deformities as well. Gabby was unconcerned. She wanted to introduce herself and hold Walter.
Gabby understood that Walter wasn’t just unique and precious to her; she also understood the bleak truth. Due to his unique needs, Walter would be exceedingly difficult to place and would either languish at the shelter for a very long time or be put to death. As they passed past Walter’s kennel, most people scowled. Many people believed the dog was just plain ugly. Not Gabby though! She considered him to be fantastic.
As soon as she saw Walter, the kind-hearted woman knew she had to take him home and adopt him. Gabby swiftly ignored the dog’s “defects.” She saw Walter as spotless. He didn’t look like other dogs, and he wouldn’t have a long life, but neither of those things mattered; what mattered was that he was capable of loving, and Gabby was able to provide him with a pleasant life.
Walter suffers with mucopolysaccharidosis, or MPS VI, a rare genetic disease. Sadly, it is a lethal ailment that worsens over time. Walter may still live a wonderful life even though he might not live a long life. When Gabby and Walter left for home, she immediately recognized Walter’s exceptional qualities. He is constantly happy. He has made the decision to walk (and even attempt to run) as much as he can. Although moving hurts Walter’s body, not much could stop him. Gabby enjoyed that, too!
First, Gabby concentrated on physical therapy in a small kiddie pool when Walter arrived home. Walter was smitten. Also, the water significantly boosted his physique. It would soon be time to tackle the yard. When it came to getting to his mother, who was encouraging him the entire way, Walter didn’t let anything slow him down.
Gabby attributes her bond with Walter to her late father’s struggle with multiple sclerosis. In the video below, she discusses how her father had a similar disability toward the end of his life, yet he was still quite strong. This gave Gabby a completely new perspective on people and animals who face such difficulties yet still show such tenacity. Gabby was reminded of her father by seeing Walter and his cheery demeanor. Her father had the same temperament.
