With the regular season nearing its end, conversations regarding who will be this season’s MVP are heating up. Players do not have a say in the matter, as only writers and broadcasters get to vote for who they think should win the Michael Jordan Trophy. However, Chicago Bulls big man Nikola Vucevic did not hesitate to share who he believes should win the prestigious award this season: the Denver Nuggets’ superstar Nikola Jokic.
“The things that he does, you look at his stats, the efficiency he’s playing at, it’s very impressive,” said Vucevic.
Three straight MVP trophies?
Jokic has won the MVP award two years in a row. A third straight MVP trophy would place him among legends like Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain and Larry Bird as the only players to win three straight MVP awards. If you ask Vucevic, Jokic is more than deserving of the award.
“I think he deserves to get another one, the way he’s playing. I think you take him out of that team, it’s not even close to the same team,” Vucevic said. “And it’s not like he’s putting up numbers and they’re not winning. They’re (25-0) when he has a triple-double. And he plays in a winning way. He makes the right play. He doesn’t force. He doesn’t try to do something just to do it. It’s all within the flow of the game. It’s winning basketball.”
Best in the West
Jokic’s individual brilliance has fueled the Nuggets’ success this season. With a triple-double average of 24.4 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 10 assists, Denver has zoomed to the top of the Western Conference with a 46-19 record, including an impressive 30-4 mark on their homecourt.
Vucevic admitted that formulating a game plan for defending Jokic is a nightmare because of his multi-faceted game.
“He can score in different ways. You never know what to expect when he has the ball. He’ll be looking one way and throws a crazy pass to the other side of the floor. Obviously, a helluva player who we have to game plan for very well,” shared Vucevic.
