Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sane will be one of the players the Bundesliga side counts on to get a positive result in the first leg against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 matchup on Tuesday at the Parc des Princes.
Sane might not have to defend PSG’s attacking trio during the 180 minutes, but the 27-year-old has to counter the French giant’s offense. The forward spoke about matching up against Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr ahead of the contest.
“PSG has exceptional players,” Sane told Bayern Munich’s official website. “I remember when I was younger and couldn’t believe I was suddenly playing against players of this caliber. Previously I had only seen them on the PlayStation or on television, and all of a sudden, I found myself next to them in the field.”
Additionally, Sane notes that he often needs to hit the reality button due to the players he shares the pitch with during games. While the Germany international is a professional footballer, there’s no shame in appreciating the players that line up for the opposition, especially those of Messi’s status.
“Early on in my career, I lay in bed at night after games like this and was still a bit dazed by what had just happened,” Sane added. “You have to focus on your game and just enjoy it. We know what to do.”
Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see if Sane can outperform PSG’s attacking trio because, should he do so, then it could mean Bayern Munich is advancing to the Champions League quarterfinals.
