Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is widely considered to be the greatest center in the history of basketball. He won six championships during his time with the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers, and the majority of people would say that he is a top-5 player of all time.
One of the things that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is well-known for, is being the NBA’s all-time scoring champion until LeBron James recently passed him in career points. Even though he is no longer in possession of the all-time scoring title, there’s no doubt that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is one of the greatest scorers ever.
A recent report by TMZ Sports revealed that the Los Angeles Lakers have recently commissioned a special ring to commemorate Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s career and his holding of the scoring record.
TMZ Sports has learned the Lakers commissioned renowned jeweler Jason Arasheben to design a ring commemorating Kareem’s remarkable career and his holding the prestigious scoring record for nearly 40 years until LeBron James surpassed him Tuesday.
One of the unique things about the ring is that it is made of 578 white diamonds. It also features his number and his iconic skyhook with which he managed to pass Wilt Chamberlain to become the all-time leading scorer at the time. Jeweler Jason Arasheben also provided a look at the ring on his Instagram page.
The ring is made up of 578 flawless, round brilliant white diamonds set in yellow gold. The front features Kareem’s number 33, along with an image of his signature skyhook shot, which he used over Utah Jazz big man, Mark Eaton when he set the record, passing Wilt Chamberlain.
There is no doubt that this is a great gesture from the Los Angeles Lakers, and we’ll see how Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will respond. This is definitely one of the most amazing pieces of custom jewelry the world has ever seen, and it is the perfect way to recognize a Lakers legend.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Thinks He Could Be A Good Player In The Modern Day
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar may have been a post-up big man, but he believes that he could still contribute in the modern day. He did however note that he’d have to see how good he was from the 3PT range, noting that everybody has to be able to shoot from the perimeter as of now.
“I know I’d be able to contribute positively to a team. I’d have to work on and see how effective I was from the 3-point line because now everybody has to be able to shoot 3-pointers. That’s an additional test that the game provides, you see teams that have a guy that can shoot 3-pointers that is a 7-footer, the potential of his versatility really adds to what a team can do.”
Obviously, we will never see a player quite like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and there is no modern player that quite encompasses what he was able to do. After all, the skyhook is viewed as the most unguardable shot in NBA history, and there is no one in the league that is as good or uses it as often as Abdul-Jabbar did.
Still, it is highly likely that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar would be able to succeed in the modern era. He was nimble for a big and highly skilled, and if he managed to extend his game to the 3PT line, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar would be a dominant force in today’s game.
