Weevil might have been introduced as Whitebeard’s son, but the two are so different some fans find it hard to believe.
The world of One Piece is filled with all kinds of mysteries, which range from small ones to massive ones. For years, readers have tried tackling these mysteries, with the onus being on the bigger, unexplainable ones. One such mystery is that of Edward Weevil and his lineage.
He was introduced after the time skip as the son of Edward Newgate, better known as Whitebeard. This revelation caused a lot of confusion within the community, as the two barely had any physical resemblance apart from their mustaches. Weevil’s appearances in the series have been limited, but Oda finally decided to give him some screen time in One Piece Chapter 1073.
Protecting His Father’s Village
In the latest chapter, it was revealed that Weevil and Miss Buckin had made their way to Sphnix, which is the hometown of Whitebeard. The pair probably came to Sphinx to get their hands on Whitebeard’s treasure, but after seeing the people being tormented by the Marines, Weevil decided to defend them. The Marines stood no chance against the might of the former Shichibukai, and they were easily defeated. It was also implied that all the battleships sent to capture him after the Shichibukai system was dissolved were destroyed. Following their crushing defeat, the Marines quickly sailed away from Sphinx and requested backup.
It was obvious that they wouldn’t let such an insult go unpunished. So, they sent Admiral Ryokugyu to capture Edward Weevil, and the former was successful in his mission. Just talking about the incident made Miss Buckin emotional, and she started to cry about being separated from her son. Marco thanked Miss Buckin for Weevil’s efforts, but his tone infuriated the old woman. She knew that Marco doubted the veracity of Weevil being the son of Whitebeard, so she told him that she could prove it. She revealed that there was one person who could confirm Weevil’s parentage.
The Proof
It has already been established that Weevil and Whitebeard do not have much in common except for a few things. So, no sane person would believe Miss Buckin’s words, but apparently, she does have proof. In the most recent chapter, she said that Vegapunk can prove that Weevil is related to Whitebeard. Considering Oda brought up Weevil and Miss Buckin during the Egghead Island arc, it certainly seems that there might be a scientific reason behind the former Shichibukai’s resemblance to Whitebeard.
Weevil has stitches all over his body, which is odd for a normal person unless they were involved in a bad accident. Interestingly, the same stitch patterns were visible on the zombies and other characters in the Thriller Bark arc. A good example would be Absalom, who had different animal parts stitched onto his body. This increases the possibility of Weevil having undergone a similar treatment, but instead of Hogback, it would have been MADS. It is clear that cloning is not impossible and that many people have been created via cloning. So, Weevil could have been created from Whitebeard’s Lineage Factor, which Miss Buckin could have easily stolen as she used to be a member of the Rocks Pirates.
Weevil’s Strength And Role In The Future
Weevil’s ridiculous strength is a big piece of evidence that supports the claim that he is Whitebeard’s clone. Admiral Kizaru compared Weevil’s strength to that of a young Whitebeard, which is a huge compliment. Just like his “father,” Weevil also fights using a naginata. The Lineage Factor holds all the information about an individual, including their fighting style. This increases the odds of Weevil being cloned from Whitebeard’s Lineage Factor instead of being his son. If this does turn out to be true, then it is fair to say that Weevil’s power should be on a different level than most characters in the series.
Weevil has managed to defeat many allies of the Whitebeard Pirates, and he has destroyed several warships. He was given a bounty of 480,000,000 berries before being appointed a member of the Shichibukai. It’s obvious that Weevil’s strength is not something to joke about. So, he would have given Ryokugyu a tough fight. It is also possible that Weevil might have been blackmailed by Ryokugyu to surrender. The Admiral doesn’t seem to be interested in playing fair, so he could have held Miss Buckin hostage.
When it comes to Weevil’s role in the series, an old interview with a One Piece editor offers some insight. According to the interview, Eiichiro Oda considers Edward Weevil to be an interesting character. Oda convinced the editor by explaining Weevil’s role in the future. This makes it glaringly obvious that Weevil is destined to play an important role in the series, and maybe it won’t be long before he finally gets involved in the action.
Miss Buckin stated in chapter 1073 that Weevil had been taken to prison, implying that he is in Impel Down. However, there is also a small chance that the ship could have been intercepted by members of the Cross Guild. The likes of Crocodile and Mihawk are strong enough to defeat Admiral Ryokugyu and his underlings. So, they could have rescued Weevil, and if they didn’t, Weevil is definitely in Impel Down. Keeping in mind Oda’s words, Weevil will have to get out of prison to be able to influence the story. So, it is possible that there might be another prison breakout in one of the upcoming arcs. Needless to say, the new chapters of One Piece will be incredibly important.
