Kelsi Pierce was told she would not be able to have children, so her mother Lisa offered to be a sᴜʀʀᴏɢᴀᴛᴇ mother for her daughter and give birth to her own grandchild.
But a few months into the pregnancy came the sʜᴏᴄᴋɪɴɢ news – Kelsi was also pregnant. “It wasn’t conventional, but they had children in the end,” says Lisa to People.
It was in 2016 that Kelsi Pierce married her husband Kyle, and right from the start the two knew they wanted to start a family and have children together. But getting pregnant would prove to be much more difficult than Kelsi had anticipated.
After failing to ᴄᴏɴᴄᴇɪᴠᴇ naturally, they sought the help of doctors, who came with the hard news that Kelsi was low on ᴇɢɢs and also had blocked ꜰᴀʟʟᴏᴘɪᴀɴ ᴛᴜʙᴇs. The couple began I.V.F ᴛʀᴇᴀᴛᴍᴇɴᴛ, which produced five ᴇᴍʙʀʏᴏs, but Kelsi was still unable to carry them. Then her mother, Lisa Rutherford, offered to be a sᴜʀʀᴏɢᴀᴛᴇ mother for her daughter. At first, Kelsi wouldn’t listen.
But when neither ᴍᴇᴅɪᴄɪɴᴇ, ɪɴᴊᴇᴄᴛɪᴏɴs nor an ᴏᴘᴇʀᴀᴛɪᴏɴ helped, Kelsi and her husband Kyle had to think again. Lisa has undergone several tests to make sure she can really help her daughter, and the procedure was finally approved in December 2019. By February of the following year, she was pregnant with her own future grandchild in her belly.
But just one month into the pregnancy, the unexpected happened – Kelsi also got pregnant on her own. This is despite the fact that by that time she had stopped all the ᴍᴇᴅɪᴄɪɴᴇ and vitamins she had taken to ꜰᴀᴄɪʟɪᴛᴀᴛᴇ a pregnancy. “It wasn’t something I even thought was possible. When I saw the two lines I was in sʜᴏᴄᴋ because I had never seen two lines before,” Kelsi said.
Lisa Rutherford was as happy as her daughter at the news and realized that she was now helping her daughter with another dream – to have more than one child. “I said, ‘maybe it’s God’s way of letting them have two children’. Because the chance that she could get another one is very, very small. So I was excited! I was just satisfied that they would have two children,” says Lisa.
Going through the pregnancies together has made Lisa and Kelsi closer than ever. In October 2020, Lisa gave birth to her granddaughter Everly, and in November it was Kelsi’s turn to give birth to her daughter Ava. “It’s just so fantastic. I just stare at them for as long as I want and I’m like, ‘I can’t believe you’re mine,’” says Kelsi.
