Tiger Woods has been named chairman of the PGA Tour’s newly formed Future Competition Committee. The nine-member group will be tasked with evaluating the tour’s competitive formats and proposing improvements.

Woods, who already serves on the PGA Tour Policy Board as Player Director, said he was “honored” by the appointment through a post on his X account.

“Honored to serve as Chairman of the Future Competition Committee,” Woods posted. “This is about shaping the next era of the PGA TOUR — for our fans, players and partners. Thanks to @BrianRolapp for his vision and leadership, and grateful to the committee members for their willingness to participate.”

The news was announced by the tour’s new CEO, Brian Rolapp, during a press conference at East Lake in Atlanta, home of the TOUR Championship.

“The purpose of this committee is pretty simple,” Rolapp said, according to the transcripts of the presser. “We’re going to design the best professional golf competitive model in the world for the benefit of PGA Tour fans, players and their partners. It is aimed at a holistic relook of how we compete on the Tour. That is inclusive of regular season, postseason and off-season.

“We’re going to focus on the evolution of our competitive model and the corresponding media products and sponsorship elements and model of the entire sport. The goal is not incremental change. The goal is significant change.”

Rolapp also expressed his pleasure that Woods had accepted the position to lead the committee.

“The PGA Tour is certainly fortunate to benefit from his experience and his time and his dedication. That will be important to this effort, and I’m personally grateful for Tiger for offering to take this on.”

The other eight committee members include five PGA Tour stars and three business advisors to the organization. The former are Patrick Cantlay, Adam Scott, Camilo Villegas, Maverick McNealy and Keith Mitchell. The three non-playing members are Joe Gorder, chairman of both the PGA Tour Board of Directors and Policy Board; John Henry, principal of Fenway Sports Group; and Theo Epstein, senior advisor to Fenway Sports Group.

According to the PGA Tour CEO, the committee will work with several guidelines, including preserving and enhancing competitive parity and meritocracy, ensuring top players play more against each other more often, and ensuring that competition on the tour is easy to understand and follow for fans and everyone else involved.
