The fourth round of THE PLAYERS Championship 2025 has been suspended. Yes, the PGA Tour’s flagship event has faced disruptions due to thunderstorms at TPC Sawgrass. The scoreboard was led by TGL co-owner Rory McIlroy. The Irishman seemed to be on track to win his second PGA Tour title of the season. Fans have already shared their disappointment at not seeing McIlroy lift the title today. But that is not the only thing the 27x PGA Tour winner might be concerned about.
If the rest of the day does get suspended, then the remaining action will be moved to Monday, March 17, 2025. Unfortunately, TGL’s first playoff round is also scheduled on the same day. That means the 4x major winner and Tiger Woods might face some crisis.
The first playoffs of TGL will be played between New York GC and Los Angeles GC. NYGC features Xander Schauffele, Rickie Fowler, and Cameron Young. On the other end, LAGC’s squad includes Collin Morikawa, Tommy Fleetwood, and Sahith Theegala. Out of them, only Morikawa and Fleetwood completed their final 18 holes in the event. Other than them, Schauffele, Fowler, Young, and Theegala are yet to complete the fourth round.
If the round is suspended to Monday, then all four individuals will have to compete at TPC Sawgrass during the day before visiting the SoFi Center arena for the 7:00 P.M. (EST) playoffs. That might be a bit too hectic for all of them, considering the intense action at THE PLAYERS Championship 2025. Not to forget, the 270 miles of distance between TPC Sawgrass in Jacksonville and the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens. Even by flight, that would take them at least a couple of hours. Hence, it won’t be a surprise if they prioritize finishing higher on the leaderboard over their TGL commitments.

This means trouble for Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy as the co-owners of TGL will need to postpone the first playoff. Interestingly, they can’t push it to Wednesday as well, as Schauffele, Theegala, Young, and Fleetwood are committed to the 2025 Valspar Championship. The Copperhead Course and SoFi Center are also about 230 miles apart. Hence, it would be impossible for either of the players to compete in TGL on Wednesday. So when can the first playoff of TGL be played?
Tiger Woods’s biggest TGL dilemma
The second playoff of TGL is scheduled for March 18, 2025, at 7:00 P.M. (EST). The reasonable gap between the first and second playoff should ideally be at least 24 hours. Unfortunately, if THE PLAYERS Championship 2025 gets postponed, then Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy will have to reschedule the event.
What they can do is schedule both the playoffs for March 18, 2025. TGL has managed to host three events on the same day in the past. So scheduling two playoffs on the coming Tuesday shouldn’t be an issue. A 3 P.M. start for the first playoff followed by a 7 P.M. start for the second can be a viable solution. It will give the players enough time to rest up and come prepared for the important knockout events. Anything else will need to be pushed back by a week.
Having said that, do you think both TGL playoffs will be played in the coming days? Share your views in the comments section.
