LIV Golf has been on a great run with the new advancements. But surprisingly, the foundation of hope that was shared with the players seems to have collapsed now. Earlier this season, Eugenio Chacarra shed light on the progress and how things have moved in LIV Golf. However, now comes a shocking update from a golf legend about another LIV golfer.
Recently, the merger talks have picked up pace, and the players got anxious about more top names likely to join in with the merger taking place. However, the movement, irrespective of the merger, is shocking for LIV, but is turning out to be fruitful for the PGA Tour. Earlier, Alan Shipnuck’s words from 2023 when Brooks Koepka admitted to having “buyer’s remorse” after switching sides and that he was already “rethinking his career choice.”
Now, with the recent update from the close golf buddy Tiger Woods, has left LIV Golf in shock. A recent post by NUCLR Golf on X shared an update from Fred Couples. The post read, “JUST IN: Fred Couples reveals that Brooks Koepka wants to return to the PGA TOUR: “I talked to Brooks Koepka all the time. I love Brooks Koepka, and I’m not going to say anything extra except I talk to him all the time… “He wants to come back. I will say that I believe he really wants to come back and play the Tour. The speculation of Koepka and Tiger Woods’s great friendship has been the top topic of discussion since his appearance at the TGL match as a spectator. But with the coverage unfolded, he was seen more hanging out with Max Homa, Tom Kim, and PGA loyalist. Since the broadcast, the speculation and old pieces of puzzle are being collected by the critics. However, now with the latest update, it seems to be turning true. To even take note of Koepka’s LIV contract will end in 2025.
Even though the signs of his return are getting bigger, will the tour allow his return?
Can LIV golfer return to PGA Tour?
The merger might have picked up pace, but the rules for the Liv golfer are still strict. The participation of LIV players in the PGA Tour events is prohibited. Even for getting back on the tour, there isn’t a cakewalk. Similar to what Eugenio Chacarra is experiencing with his 2025 schedule, every golfer will have to follow the same. The Spanish golfer is participating in the events of the Asian Tour and the DP World Tour.
As per the rules, LIV golfers who wish to switch back will have to apply for reinstatement. However, there is no assurance of granting the same. Earlier, Jimmy Dunne, policy board member of the PGA Tour, has shared about the process. He said, “Players on the LIV [tour] that wanted to reinstate into the PGA Tour would go through a process [and] suspension… Whatever the penalty was, they’d have to decide whether they wanted to do that or not and then they could play.”
However, with the merger talks in action, recently within a month, the 47th POTUS has involved himself twice, and recently Yasir Al-Rumayyan, Governor of PIF, has also been part of it. So the merger could be the easy access for the golfer who wishes to get back. Even though, in the case of Koepka, there is still no surety or confirmation shared from his side.
