Tiger Woods HOPEFUL of playing in ‘bigger events’ in 2025 after withdrawing from Genesis Invitational

Tiger Woods is planning to play in some ‘bigger events’ this year after withdrawing from the Genesis Invitational last week.

Tiger Woods was originally supposed to make his 2025 debut at the Genesis Invitational this past week. However, the demise of his mother Kultida Woods saw him withdraw from this event. The golfer did pay a visit to the event on Sunday and expressed his optimism of playing in some ‘bigger events’ this year.

The 15-time major champion’s last official appearance came at the Open Championship in July 2024. After failing to make the cut in the major championship, he underwent another back surgery. Unlike 2023, he did not return at the Hero World Challenge.

Last year, Woods made his competitive return to golf at the Genesis Invitational. However, he would withdraw from the event later on due to an illness. This year he was once again stated to play in the event in which he also serves as the host.

However, after the death of his mother, he postponed the plans for his return. On Sunday, he joined the broadcasting booth of CBS Sports and revealed his plans to play in some big event this year.

“My goal was to play more and I haven’t played. Got to work on that. This process was unexpected. I’ll get back after it and look forward to playing some bigger events.”

While Tiger Woods has not mentioned which event will be play next, there are chances that he could return to action next month. Before the Masters Tournament in April, the PGA Tour will host the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Players Championship.

These two signature events will take place in back-to-back weeks. For now, Woods has turned his attention to the TGL. The former World No.1 is scheduled to take part in his team’s match on Monday night against the New York Golf Club.

Tiger Woods provides positive update regarding golf merger between PGA Tour and PIF

In the last few days, the golf merger talks between the PGA Tour and the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia have sped up. On Sunday, Tiger Woods provided another positive update regarding this while he visited the Torrey Pines course.

Two weeks ago, Woods along with PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and player-director Adam Scott met with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House. The trio would seek his help in getting the deal wrapped up.

Since that meeting, there has been some movement in the merger talks. During his visit at the Genesis Invitational, Woods claimed that the talks were heading in the right place and that a re-unification of the game could have “very soon”.

I think we’re in a very positive place right now. We had a meeting with the president. Unfortunately, I had some other circumstances that came up but Jay and Adam, they did great during the meeting and we have a subsequent meeting coming up.

Tiger Woods said during the CBS Sports broadcast

The world of golf was left split with the emergence of LIV Golf in 2021. Several marquee names of the tour would them and join the newly formed league on huge contracts.

The world of golf was left split with the emergence of LIV Golf in 2021. Several marquee names of the tour would them and join the newly formed league on huge contracts.

It was in June 2023 when PIF governor Yasir-Al Rumayyan and Jay Monahan sat down and announced a merger deal. With this framework agreement, the two tours tried to end the civil war. Time will now tell when this merger deal actually closes and re-unifies the game.
