The Genesis Invitational will be an opportunity for many to try to take an important step right at the start of the season. Starting the season on a positive note is every golfer’s dream. When you have momentum, it makes your job easier in the future and you become a huge threat to your competition. This is one of the reasons why Rory McIlroy wants to start in his own style.
This tournament is specific for many things, and the host of this tournament, Tiger Woods, will not perform even though he was originally supposed to.
Genesis is specific in that 20% of the pot prize will be directed to the winner, instead of the usual 18%.
During the press conference before the tournament, Rory stressed that this tournament has Tiger’s signature all over it. As a golfer who has been playing for years, Woods knew what was important to do in order to make everyone happy.
“If you look at this tournament, you’ve got a cut, you’ve got the winner making more of a percentage, it’s got Tiger all over it,” McIlroy said, as quoted by The Golfing Gazette.
“They’re things that he has probably advocated for a long time, which is when you’ve won 82 times out here, you would want more of a percentage when you win. But I like it. Yeah, I think that’s pro-competitive.”
Rory McIlroy: We live in a capitalist society
The Northern Irishman has nothing against such changes and rules, emphasizing that we live in a capitalist society where the best should earn the most.
“I think that’s a great thing. We live in a capitalist society, and the people that have success should earn more.”- he concluded.
McIlroy is motivated to succeed in this tournament, and judging by his performances so far, we can expect him to make a good result. It will be interesting to follow his performance.
