Will Tiger Woods Be Teeing Off in September & Finally Break His Hiatus After the Open Championship?

Having played only 5 events, fans have not gotten a year full of Tiger Woods. He’s been in the limelight only a few times this year, mostly as a somewhat parental and authoritative figure in the ongoing LIV Golf and PGA Tour saga. But competitively, he hasn’t been seen outside of the majors, leading fans to wonder if we will get to see him play in September.

Unfortunately, Tiger Woods will not be playing competitive golf in September. He conceded that he needed a break after his last tournament, the British Open at Royal Troon, and aimed to get into better fitness to play in December at the Hero World Challenge. “I’m going to just keep getting physically better and keep working on it,” he said after getting cut at the British Open.

In September, the PGA Tour hosts the Procore Championship and the Presidents Cup. There was speculation that he would be involved in the Presidents Cup, but that was not to be. As for the Procore Championship, the start of the FedEx Cup Fall, the field would only consist of players such as Wyndham Clark, Sahith Theegala, and Max Homa. The full field and qualification parameters have been published, and Woods is not in the field.

Coming into 2024, Woods was hoping to play once a month. But illness and form issues put a stop to that after he failed to make three cuts and withdrew from the Genesis Invitational, which he hosts. He also had other off-course plans that he continues to pursue, but the hope of one tournament a month has long since died.

He was also touted as Ryder Cup captain for 2025, but Keegan Bradley was chosen instead. This was because Woods said that he is much too busy with his responsibilities related to the PGA Tour and LIV Golf merger, as well as the businesses he attends, such as the TGR Foundation. Although many people would love to see Woods lead Team USA in 2025, his record in the competition would give them a few doubts.

The would-be Ryder Cup captain
In the Presidents Cup, Tiger Woods has delivered great results as both a player and playing captain. However, Woods’ Presidents Cup history greatly outshines his Ryder Cup history. For one, he has more losses than wins (21-13, respectively) and, even more surprisingly, has won just one Ryder Cup in his glittering career.

As for the Presidents Cup, Jim Furyk has previously talked about how much of a great golfing mind Woods is and how he assisted with his own analytics team in 2022 to strategize and match pairings. Furyk has also said that he hadn’t reached out to Woods but would like to pick his brain just to give his team an edge.
