Shazam! 2’s Breakout Star Was Even Better in 2022’s Most Overlooked Thriller

Grace Caroline Currey is excellent in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which isn’t surprising considering her excellent performance in 2022’s Fall

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is, first and foremost, a story about family, and as a result, the cast of characters is large. One of the film’s breakout stars is Grace Caroline Currey, who appeared in the original Shazam! but gets a more substantial role in the sequel. Currey plays Mary Bromfield, the leader of the Shazam Family, and in the sequel, she has the opportunity to play Mary and her superhero alter-ego, which wasn’t the case in the first movie.

In getting the opportunity to play both versions of Mary, Currey is able to demonstrate a wider range of her acting abilities that not only show off her skills but help to bring out the very best iteration of Mary Marvel possible. There’s no doubt that Currey deserves praise for her performance as Mary, but it shouldn’t be a surprise that she was capable of this kind of work. She was also the star of the 2022 film Fall, which is entirely dependent on her performance.

What Makes Grace Caroline Currey Great in Fall

Fall is about two girls who climb a decommissioned TV tower and become stranded at the top. The thriller features shades of other action-horror films like The Descent and 47 Meters Down, which also feature women trapped in extreme conditions. And like those stories, the stunt premise is the initial draw of the film, but that alone can’t sustain an entire movie; there needs to be a grounded, human story at the center for there to be any impact.

Currey plays Becky, a widow struggling to overcome her husband’s tragic death. Becky’s grief strains her relationships, especially with her best friend, Hunter, and her father, James. Currey’s performance handles the nuanced differences between the way Becky relates to Hunter prior to Dan’s death and after, as well as how their relationship becomes more complicated the longer they remain trapped on top of the tower. Becky goes through the entire spectrum of human emotions over the course of the film, and Currey’s performance is believable and engaging from start to finish.

Why Fall Shouldn’t Be Forgotten

Fall is a story about survival, and considering most of the film features just two characters, it’s important that Currey’s performance is strong in order to make the movie work. And it will be vital to remember how she carried that movie as she moves forward with her career. Fury of the Gods may be struggling with critics and at the box office, but as a major superhero film, it’s not unreasonable to believe that Currey’s standout performance could catapult her into a meteoric rise.

If she breaks out in a big way, there’s a risk that Fall will fly under the radar due to the fact that the film is small in scale and overlooked when it was first released. But that shouldn’t be the case because the film not only received positive reviews, but it also delivers on its premise. It’s a sharp, efficient thriller that balances absurdity, extremity and realistic characters. And while it’s worth checking out because there is a sequel in development, Currey is the real reason to go back and watch Fall.
