Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez ‘is in line for a hefty pay rise this summer’… with Erik ten Hag ‘keen to reward him’ after stellar debut season in the Premier League

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez is set for a hefty pay rise this summer, according to reports.

Martinez, who was part of Argentina’s World Cup winning squad in December, has become an integral part of Erik ten Hag‘s defence at Old Trafford this season.

There had been concerns that the defender’s physique – namely his 5ft 9in frame – would prove costly in the Premier League but he has excelled with consistent performances for the Red Devils.

And Martinez is set to be rewarded by the club’s hierarchy with a £50,000 wage increase according to The Sun, though there are no immediate plans.

Martinez, who joined from Ajax for £55million last summer, currently earns £120,000-a-week and his contract runs until 2027.

Ten Hag wants to recognise the defender’s elevated status in the squad with a wage increase

The report claims Ten Hag wants to recognise Martinez’s elevated status in the Manchester United squad with a salary that matches it.

The 25-year-old is set to miss the remainder of the season, including next month’s FA Cup final clash with Manchester City, after picking up a foot injury in the 2-2 draw with Sevilla last month.

Martinez vowed to come back stronger and thanked supporters after suffering the season ending injury.

He posted on his social media channels: ‘Not the way I imagined what’s been a very special season would end, but sometimes we face obstacles along the way that we have to overcome to make us stronger and we learn from them.

‘I know that I’ll be back soon to go for more. In the meantime, I’ll continue to support my team-mates to achieve our objectives.

‘The messages and support I’ve received has been amazing, they’re giving me strength and encouragement.

‘Thanks to you all from the bottom of my heart.’
