David De Gea ‘agrees’ to a new Man Utd contract with significant pay cut

David de Gea has agreed fresh terms with Manchester United to extend his stay at Old Trafford.

According to The Telegraph, De Gea has settled on a deal that comes with a lower basic salary and incentives for matches played and performances in competitions.

The 32-year-old was on a deal worth more than £350,000 per week but United had no interest in renewing his contract at such high wages.

His new contract is waiting to be signed off by United before an official announcement is made.

A new contract for David De Gea makes sense

Man United’s priority in the upcoming transfer window is to sign an elite centre-forward. They have been wasteful in front of the goal this season, adding more pressure on their defence to carve out positive results.

In the Premier League, United have scored 49 goals. Leicester City, who are fighting to stay in the English top flight, have scored the same number of goals.

De Gea is not perfectly suited to Erik ten Hag’s style of play. His recent costly errors have put more scrutiny on his performances.

He is leading the race of PL Golden Glove this season but also has made several high-profile howlers, forcing his stocks to fall.

He might end up staying at the Theatre of Dreams, but that does not guarantee him the first-choice goalkeeper spot.

Dean Henderson is set to return to United after spending this campaign on loan to Nottingham Forest.

If he is allowed to leave to secure more game-time, Ten Hag would want the club to sign a shot-stopper who can provide genuine cover and competition to the Spaniard.

United are long-time admirers of Porto’s Diogo Costa and Brentford’s David Raya, but they could move to Old Trafford only at a hefty transfer fee.
