Paris Saint-Germain have taken the decision to suspend Lionel Messi for two weeks after the Argentine made an unauthorised trip to Saudi Arabia.

PSG are having a low-key end to the season, having already been eliminated from the Champions League and the French Cup. In Ligue 1, they are the leaders, but have Marseille breathing down their necks, just five points behind.

Their on-field problems have now been joined by some off-field ones because of a situation involving Messi.

The Argentine, in the midst of a debate about his future in Paris, has been sanctioned with a two-week ban for travelling to Saudi Arabia, as reported in France by RMC.

RMC report that the French club consider Messi‘s trip to have been a “serious error”, having taken place during the season.

The player featured in the team’s shock home loss to Lorient on Sunday and their next fixture is this coming Sunday away to Troyes.

Qatari-owned PSG were in no mood to be merciful after one of their star players was working as an ambassador for their gulf rivals.

There have also been rumours that Messi could be plying his trade in Saudi Arabia before long.

Under this internal suspension, Messi will miss the upcoming Ligue 1 games against Troyes and Ajaccio.

If the sanction is just two weeks, he could return against Auxerre on May 21.
