All Straw Hat members in One Piece fight together for their Captain, but they all follow their individual dreams.
From the very beginning, dreams have been the driving force for the majority of the One Piece cast. Whether passed on by an older character through Inherited Will or simply a burning desire of the character from their youth, each member of the Straw Hat crew is fueled by a dream.
Not only are these dreams the very reason our heroes took the dangerous journey into the Grand Line, but for many, they likely also hold clues or critical components of the series’ conclusion. With One Piece steadily approaching its finale, it is important to understand each crew member’s dream.
Jimbei
Jimbei’s dream is a bit less clear than many of his shipmates, but it is still likely a critical component of the end of One Piece. Having inherited the will of his former captain Fisher Tiger, Jimbei desires true freedom and equality for all fishmen. There have been several hints following the time skip that the fishmen play a key role in the lore of One Piece, but it is still unclear what that freedom will look like at the end.
Franky
In some ways, Franky may have already accomplished his dream. The shipwright’s desire is to build a ship that can circumnavigate the world. Since this can only be accomplished by the ship of the Pirate King, Franky’s dream is directly tied to Luffy’s. In this way, Franky also inherited the will of his mentor Tom, who built the ship of the previous Pirate King. So long as the 1000 Sunny is not completely destroyed before the end of the series, Franky will achieve his dream and follow directly in Tom’s footsteps.
Brook
Brook’s dream is simple compared to many of the other Straw Hats, but it is one of the most important to the fanbase. The musician has stayed alive for 90 years for the sole purpose of fulfilling his promise to the giant whale Laboon. While this specific dream has little bearing on the broader story of One Piece, it can only be accomplished after the crew completes its journey through the Grand Line, when Luffy becomes the Pirate King.
Robin
While Luffy may not care about the mysteries of the world at large, Robin’s dream ties directly into the biggest questions the series has presented so far. It is also why Robin is arguably the most important character in the entire series. As one of the few characters who can read the pone glyphs, and with a dream to uncover the true history of the world, Robin poses a greater threat to the World Government than any Pirate King ever could, though she and Luffy will likely achieve their dreams at the same time.
Chopper
The ship’s doctor has a perfectly fitting dream, which is perhaps the noblest out of the entire crew. Chopper wants to become a doctor capable of curing any disease. While this dream is not directly tied to the crew’s mission or the greater mysteries of the world, there is no doubt that his medical prowess and knowledge have grown by traveling the Grand Line.
Sanji
Sanji’s dream is to find the mythical All Blue — a place in the ocean where all four seas meet. While there is no record of its existence, All Blue would theoretically contain every fish in the world, making it a dream location for a master chef.
Given that the crew’s dreams are the driving force of One Piece as a story, it is likely that All Blue will exist by the end of the series, but it is unclear what form it will take.
Usopp
Usopp’s dream is the most difficult to define effectively. Given his role in a number of world-altering battles, one could argue that the sniper is already a great warrior of the sea. That said, in order for the dream to come true, Usopp would have to believe it himself. It’s also worth noting that much of his drive to achieve this dream is tied to his father, Yasopp. It’s possible Usopp will achieve his dream when the Straw Hats finally come face to face with the crew of Red Hair Shanks.
Nami
Since childhood, Nami has been fascinated with maps and has a true talent for map-making. Her skill as a navigator has kept the crew alive on countless occasions. While that ability has come in handy, it also directly serves Nami’s dream of drawing a map of the entire world. Like many of the crew’s dreams, this can only be achieved by visiting every island on the Grand Line and finding the One Piece.
Zoro
Although every member of the crew has had to develop great skill in combat, Zoro’s is the only dream that demands it. The former pirate hunter wants to become the strongest swordsman in the world. Directly tied to that, he also made a promise to his captain never to lose a fight following his defeat at Baratie. While a childhood tragedy initially fueled this goal, Zoro’s desire to protect his crew mates also drives him toward his dream.
He will eventually achieve his dream and avenge that loss by defeating the current strongest swordsman, Dracule Mihawk.
Luffy
Luffy’s dream may be the most commonly-repeated phrase in all of anime. He is the man who will become King of the Pirates. Achieving this dream is the only reason Luffy cares about finding One Piece, despite all the other juicy mysteries wrapped up in the treasure’s discovery. It’s clear that achieving this dream will naturally result in so many other plot threads and mysteries resolving themselves, but all that matters to Luffy is doing what it takes to become the Pirate King.
