Tatiana Maslany says she’s ready to come back to Marvel, but she thinks it would be better if her character is put in more unlikely circumstances.
When Tatiana Maslany appeared in She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, it shook the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe fandom in a big way. Some liked the quirky takes on characters like She-Hulk and Daredevil, while others wrung their hands over the show being too silly. Now Maslany has revealed more about her potential return to the MCU in an interview with Gold Derby, saying that while she doesn’t know when She-Hulk would return, she wants stories that are “putting her in a situation that is very unlikely” for the simple reason that she thinks “that would be super fun.”
Interestingly, Maslany feels like making Marvel’s beloved characters fish out of water is one of the real strengths of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law. Taking the brooding Daredevil character played by Charlie Cox and putting him into a quirky comedy, for example, ended up being far funnier and more entertaining than even Doctor Strange could have foreseen. And speaking of Strange, his assistant Wong showed us just how deadpan funny he can be when he’s not in the middle of end-of-the-world emergency situations.
And when it comes to She-Hulk returning to the MCU, Maslany would like that dynamic to apply to her own character as well. As she said in the interview, “The thing about She-Hulk, to me, is that she’s so out of place, and that out-of-placeness, I think, has got legs.” But that leaves the big question: for a character whose show is completely meta (seriously, the season ended with her arguing down an AI stand-in for Kevin Feige), how do you make her even more out-of-place?
Maslany herself doesn’t seem to know, and she was happy to joke about how “the internet knows more than I do” when it comes to what She-Hulk will be doing next. As for our little corner of the internet, we think it would be fascinating for the door to swing both ways and for this not-so-jolly green giant to make a cameo in an otherwise very serious show such as Daredevil: Born Again. Whether she adds a bit of needed levity to the tortured life of Matt Murdock or she becomes more serious in the face of threats like the Kingpin, we’ll be there munching a big bowl of popcorn.
While popping She-Hulk into serious settings may sound crazy, it is certainly in the spirit of what Tatiana Maslany shared in the interview. At one point, she joked that “if I’m expecting or if I want a certain thing, likely the best option is to do the exact opposite.” Therefore, if she’s expecting to just pop up again in a second season of her capeless comedy, we might as well expect her to square off against someone like Jonathan Majors’ Kang alongside the Avengers.
Ultimately, the reason that we are just as enthusiastic as Maslany about the return of She-Hulk is that her character was a real breath of fresh air in a Disney+ environment that was getting a little too stale. In a world where shows like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki are doing their best to be prestige, cinematic dramas, it was fun to have a show that reveled in being a low-stakes television comedy that just wanted audiences to laugh. Whatever Maslany does next, we’re confident that she has a bright future in the MCU (and no, we’re not just talking about the light from the gamma radiation).
