One of Blackbeard’s most notable quirks is his fascination with the number 3. Here’s a closer look at why he’s so obsessed with it.
Marshall D. Teach, better known as Blackbeard, is one of the Four Emperors of the Sea. Currently, he is considered one of the biggest threats to the authority of the World Government. Before becoming one of the strongest characters in One Piece, Blackbeard used to be a nobody. He began his journey at a very young age, and he ended up joining the Whitebeard pirates. For the next few years, Blackbeard stayed on as an ordinary member of the crew.
He had the potential to rise through the ranks and become one of the commanders of the Whitebeard Pirates. It is possible that he was even offered a promotion, but he passed it up because he had his own ambitions. Despite One Piece having over a thousand chapters, there are still many things about Blackbeard that remain a mystery. However, Oda is known for his foreshadowing, and it is possible that he might be insinuating something special about Blackbeard by using the number 3.
The Number 3
At first, it doesn’t seem like there is a connection between Blackbeard and the number 3. But once things are put under the microscope, it becomes clear that there is in fact a big connection between the two. Blackbeard’s Jolly Roger has three skulls on it, he has been seen carrying three pistols, and his beard has three ends. The pattern of three is a possible hint toward Blackbeard having three Devil Fruits. At the moment, Blackbeard appears to have two Devil Fruits, namely, the Yami Yami no Mi and the Gura Gura no Mi. He stole the Yami Yami no Mi from Teach, and he got the Gura Gura no Mi in Marineford.
Both the Devil Fruits are incredibly powerful, and they belong to different classes. The Yami Yami no Mi is a Logia-type Devil Fruit that grants its user the ability to manipulate darkness at will. The darkness can engulf anything that Blackbeard wants, which includes living as well as non-living things. The biggest strength of this Devil Fruit is its ability to nullify the power of other Devil Fruit, which means that even if Blackbeard didn’t have Haki he could still bypass the powers of other Devil Fruits. The only downside to this Devil Fruit is that it doesn’t grant intangibility. However, Blackbeard seems to have a very special body, so this doesn’t affect him that much.
Moving on to his second Devil Fruit, the Gura Gura no Mi is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit. It grants its user the ability to create earthquakes out of nowhere. This ability can prove to be deadly, especially while fighting on the sea, as Blackbeard can create tsunamis out of nowhere, which can decimate an entire fleet of ships. So far, Blackbeard has arguably the strongest Devil Fruits in the Paramecia and Logia classes. Going by the pattern of three, Blackbeard should also have three Devil Fruits, as there are three different classes and not just two.
The Final Devil Fruit
The only class missing is Zoan, which is the most common type of Devil Fruits. However, it would be foolish to assume that Blackbeard would eat any ordinary zoan-type devil fruit. Considering that the Blackbeard Pirates have been cherry-picking the Devil Fruits that they have eaten, it is only logical for Blackbeard to choose a Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit.
There are many theories out there that suggest that Blackbeard is yet to consume his third and final Devil Fruit, but it doesn’t make sense considering Marco said that Teach always had a special body. If Blackbeard hadn’t eaten the Zoan Devil Fruit first, he couldn’t have had a special body. So, it seems that Blackbeard has already completed the trifecta. This begs the question: What Devil Fruit has he consumed?
The Power of A God
Luffy has the power of the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, a Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit that is based on the ancient warrior named Nika, who was worshipped as the Sun God. As Blackbeard is the final villain, it is only fair that Oda gives him a power that is similar to that of Luffy. The obvious parallel would be to give Blackbeard the power of a god of the moon or something close to it. But Oda has already given Blackbeard the Yami Yami no Mi, which is the opposite of Luffy’s symbolic representation of the sun. So, Blackbeard’s third Devil Fruit might be unrelated to Luffy.
Oda has been quite bold in his use of Greek mythology, and there is a good reason to believe that he might have picked another character from the same mythology for Blackbeard’s final power-up. The Greek entity that matches Blackbeard is Poseidon. This theory might seem bizarre at first (as there is already one Poseidon present in the story), but there are a few similarities between Blackbeard and Poseidon. According to the ancient Greeks, Poseidon was the god of earthquakes, horses, and seas. Blackbeard and Poseidon both have the ability to cause earthquakes, and they are linked to Medusa and Pegasus. In One Piece chapter 1063, he was seen riding Stronger, who ate the Uma Uma no Mi, Model: Pegasus. Blackbeard has also attacked Boa Hancock, who is one of the Gorgon Sisters, and she can turn people to stone. In Greek mythology, Pegasus was the son of Medusa and Poseidon. So, that’s another connection. Also, Poseidon fits in with Blackbeard’s obsession with the number 3, as the ancient god’s trident had three prongs.
According to Vegapunk, a Devil Fruit user has unnatural power, which is why the sea loathes them. This explains why Devil Fruit users lose their ability to swim and have their energy drained. But if one were to eat Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Poseidon, it would make their body special and let them circumvent the limitation of having a single Devil Fruit.
