Mohamed Salah believes the disappointment experienced during the current campaign will inspire Liverpool to come back strong next season
Jurgen Klopp’s side will end 2022/23 without a trophy to their name, a far cry from the heights witnessed last season, during which two major honours were claimed while also reaching the final of the Champions League.
The only thing now left to play for is securing Champions League football, though Saturday’s 4-1 defeat at Manchester City has cast further doubt on the Reds reaching the top four come the end of May.
Adamant Liverpool will learn the lessons of the repeated setbacks suffered this term, however, Salah told BT Sport: “It will make us more hungry next season. It’s tough this season to feel you are out of all competitions, but this is football and we have to accept it. We need to bounce back next season, that is the best way.”
Opening the scoring in Saturday’s painful loss at the Etihad Stadium, Salah’s 11th goal in a Reds shirt versus City ensured he became the first player in the club’s history to score in four separate matches against the defending Premier League champions in the same season.
Asked pre-match how he continues to prove pivotal in the matches of significant importance, the Egyptian said: “I don’t know. I always try to prepare myself well in the big games as it’s a game everyone watches in the world.
“Man United in the first two seasons, maybe they were just saying, ‘you couldn’t score against us’, and making fun of me. Robbo and Trent always try to mention that to me all the time, Cancelo next game, ‘what’s he going to do to you?’ It’s always like this between us.”
