“Red Table Talk” is back, and the conversation is just as juicy as ever.
Jada Pinkett Smith’s Facebook Watch series with daughter Willow Smith and mother Adrienne Banfield-Jones returned Monday with the first episode from the second half of Season 1, and fans got some red hot details about Pinkett Smith and husband Will Smith’s notoriously private relationship.
A teaser released last week, in which Smith said his wife “cried for 45 days straight,” gave viewers the first glance into Monday’s episode. But fans couldn’t have known all the truth bombs the Smiths would drop in the episode, aptly titled “Becoming Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”
These were the five craziest moments from Monday’s episode about their marriage:
Will and Jada called their wedding “horrible”
Pinkett Smith said that she never wanted to get married or have a wedding, but once she got pregnant she felt pressured to tie the knot, in part because of her mother.
The nuptials didn’t go quite as planned, with Pinkett Smith, Smith and Banfield-Jones calling it “horrible.”
“It was a mess,” Banfield-Jones said to some laughs around the table. “Jada was sick, she was very unpleasant.”
Pinkett Smith was three months pregnant at the time of the ceremony, and she said “I was so upset that I had to have a wedding. I was so pissed. I went crying down the freakin’ aisle getting married.”
Will tried to meet Jada, but met his first wife instead
Smith said that he saw Pinkett Smith and knew that the two of them would have a connection. Fate stepped in with different plans when Smith tried to meet Pinkett, star of “A Different World.” When the Fresh Prince showed up at the show’s taping, another woman caught his eye: Sheree Fletcher, Smith’s first (and now ex) wife.
Smith said that he and Pinkett Smith had “all of these near misses,” but the two eventually ended up meeting after Smith was already married to Fletcher, though they’re adamant that they did not have an affair.
Smith recounted breaking down crying because “I knew that was the woman I was supposed to be with, but I was never getting divorced.” That is, until Smith said Fletcher filed for divorce, which gave him the opportunity to be with Pinkett Smith.
Jada knew immediately that she was pregnant and cried all night
“We started dating and then I got pregnant two years in,” Pinkett Smith said during the episode. “I knew the moment after the act that I was pregnant.”
“He didn’t believe me, but I knew,” she said about Smith. “You know those big locks on the bank? I could feel that in my womb, in my uterus.”
Smith said he wasn’t as convinced about an impending pregnancy: “It was literally four seconds after we had sex … she said ‘I’m pregnant!’ I said ‘Babe, I think scientifically you not pregnant yet.’ ”
Pinkett Smith said that she cried the whole night after, wondering what her life would become, but she seems happy now that the pregnancy resulted in her firstborn Jaden Smith.
Their relationship changed when Jada turned 40
Smith said that he had a perfect image of what he wanted his family to look like for years, and that Pinkett Smith grew unhappy in their private life trying to keep up with their public persona.
He remembered a moment when Willow, age 9 at the time, called him out on it. “She said, ‘Oh daddy it’s so sad. … Mommy isn’t it sad? Daddy has a picture of a family in his mind, and it’s not us.’ ”
Pinkett Smith said that when she turned 40, she had a realization about her relationship: “I can’t do this like this anymore.”
The pair now refer to each other as life partners not husband and wife.
They didn’t use profanity with each other for 20 years
Smith recalled a moment where he was upset that Pinkett Smith cursed at him when he had son Trey in his arms.
Smith said he pulled her aside to talk about the incident: “I said ‘Jada, this is the deal. I grew up in a household where I watched my father punch my mother in the face, and I will not create a house, a space, an interaction with a person where there’s profanity and violence. If you have to talk to me like that, we can’t be together. We’re not going to use any profanity in our interactions. We’re not going to raise our voice, we’re not going to be violent. I can’t do it.’
“It was 20 years before we used profanity in any conversation that we had,” Smith said.
“We couldn’t afford to, because it could get ugly,” Pinkett Smith said. The couple said they disciplined themselves to only talk about their feelings once they had calmed down and could have a peaceful conversation about what was bothering them.
