Scott McTominay scored his first goals in 2023 as helped Scotland to an international victory.
The Manchester United midfielder netted two goals in Scotland’s 3-0 Euro 2024 qualifying victory over Cyprus.
Scotland manager Steve Clarke had actually started Scott McTominay on the bench, a role he has been stuck in at Manchester United in recent months.
After coming on with 23 minutes to go with the score at 1-0, McTominay struck two late goals to wrap up the home victory.
Fernandes message to McTominay
Scott McTominay struck in the 87th minute and then in injury time to send the Tartan Army crowd home happy.
The Manchester United midfielder had only scored one international goal before this, which came against Israel in 2021.
McTominay celebrated Scotland’s win with a post on social media hailing a ‘good start’ to qualifying.
He received a response from United teammate Bruno Fernandes, who jokingly asked if he was now a striker.
McTominay has previously played as a forward at under-21 level at United, but the lack of forwards for the first team has not quite got so desperate that he has been deployed in this role.
He is not the only United midfielder to net a brace during the international break, with Marcel Sabitzer scoring twice in a win over Azerbaijan.
Fernandes did pretty well himself too, creating eight goalscoring chances in a 4-0 win for Portugal over Liechtenstein.
