The entire world knows Franky by his nickname. However, the Straw Hats’ shipwright has a good reason for discarding his real name.
One Piece fans are often more interested in characters with superior Haki skills or powerful Devil Fruit abilities. Therefore, characters such as Franky are often sidelined regardless of how strong or brilliant they may be. However, despite not having any Haki or Devil Fruit, the shipwright of the Straw Hat Pirates is far from being weak; he is a cyborg with a lot of deadly explosives in his arsenal. Just like any of the Straw Hats, Franky’s tragic past lays the foundation of his character. As a child, he overcame the trauma of being abandoned with the help of his mentor, Tom.
Sadly, the mentor he thought of as family was taken from him by the Marines. Years later, Franky finally found a family and a home with the Straw Hat crew after losing the only person he cared about. The series only mentions his real name, Cutty Flam, in passing. The rest of the world only knows him by Franky. Even his bounty posters seem to have that name, proving that officially, Franky has completely discarded his given name. However, he has a very important reason for doing that.
Why Is Franky Abandoned and How Does He Survive?
Franky was born somewhere in South Blue, and his parents were pirates. For reasons unknown, they threw him off their ship into the ocean. The series hints that his parents abandoned him because it was too difficult to take care of a child while continuing with the journey. Regardless, being thrown away by his family at a young age broke him down, and Franky developed a deep-rooted hatred for not just his parents but also pirates in general.
Luckily, Tom, a legendary shipwright best known for making Roger’s ship, rescued Franky and made him his apprentice after seeing his talent. In Kozuki Oden’s backstory, Franky’s distrust in pirates was shown when the former admired the young child’s talent and asked him to join his crew. The young Frank quickly declined the offer, stating his distrust in pirates because of his pirate parents and his strong refusal to become one himself.
Why Franky No Longer Uses His Real Name, Cutty Flam
During the time Franky studied under Tom’s tutelage, the latter’s other apprentice at the time, Iceburg mentioned that Cutty Flam was a weird name and then gave him the nickname Franky. The new name certainly does blend better into the foreign land. Although Iceburg only starts calling Franky by his nickname because of how much the latter hates his parents, he doesn’t hesitate to completely adopt this name. In this way, Franky breaks the final thing that had been tying him to his parents, and he never looks back.
