Dwayne Johnson’s WrestleMania match was scrapped due to fitness concerns, heard that one before?
It turns out that concerns over The Rock’s fitness scuppering WrestleMania plans are becoming something of a theme.
Back in 2012, The Rock returned to face John Cena at WrestleMania 28 in a match billed as “once in a lifetime.” On that occasion, the People’s Champion got the win which set up another match the following year. This time it was Cena who picked up the win, leading many fans to believe there would be a third match to decide the series.
However that match never came, and The Rock hasn’t wrestled a serious match since. The controversy surrounding his second match with Cena stretched far beyond wrestling as the injuries he sustained during the match led to filming for the movie Hercules being pushed back at great cost to the film studio.
In fact, it was fears that this would happen again that prevented The Rock from wrestling at WrestleMania 30. Famously this was the night that Brock Lesnar defeated The Undertaker and broke his legendary WrestleMania streak. However, according to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, WWE actually wanted Lesnar to face The Rock, but the Hollywood star was prevented from getting in the ring by movie studios scared he would get injured.
Dwayne Johnson Turned Down Match At WrestleMania 39
Heading into WrestleMania 39 there had long been rumours that Johnson would be lacing up his boots one more time to take on Roman Reigns. The match would pitch the biggest star of today against arguably the biggest star ever, and the intrafamily storyline seeming writes itself. However, Johnson reportedly turned the match down, saying that he wouldn’t be fit enough to wrestle.
