Darwin Nunez enjoyed his second Merseyside in England, starring to help his side claim three crucial points at the Anfield Stadium.
Liverpool were in dire need of a positive result after a recent run of poor form. The striker started up front alongside Mohamed Salah and new signing, Cody Gakpo.
The Uruguayan hitman led a blistering counter-attack before setting up Salah in the 36th minute for the opening goal. Gakpo got his first goal for Liverpool in the second half.
A fracas broke out late into the game when the Toffees’ goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford shoved Reds’ left-back, Andy Robertson. The incident led to members of both teams advancing on each other in a typical derby fashion.
Nunez mocks Everton
Nunez, who had by this time been substituted for the returning Diogo Jota, was among the players who were involved.
The 23-year-old made his way to the scene of the incident and could be seen holding up his fingers in what could be interpreted as him signalling the scoreline.
He held up two fingers at Idrissa Gueye as the simmering tensions quickly simmered down.
Robertson vs Pickford
Sports Brief also reported on Robertson’s minor confrontation with Pickford, which in turn led to players from both sides engaging in the bust-up.
The Everton goalkeeper walked over to the Liverpool left-back and bumped him in an attempt to quickly get the ball rolling, as Sean Dyche’s men attempted to get back into the game.
Robertson responded savagely by laughing in Pickford’s face. The incident saw players from both sides jump in, with Virgil Van Dijk and Amadou Onana among the players involved.
The three points helped Liverpool move above Chelsea into ninth place, as Jurgen Klopp’s team pursues Champions League football next season.
