Archaeologists in Israel say 44 pure gold coins dating back to the 7th century have been found hidden in a wall at a nature reserve.
Excavation director Yoav Lerer told the BBC: “We can imagine the owner hiding his property from the danger of war, hoping to one day return to get his property back. Looking back, we know he was unlucky.”
In addition to gold coins, the excavation also uncovered the remains of buildings, aqueducts and pipes, copper coins and other valuables, the Israeli government said.
Dr. Gabriela Bijovsky, a currency expert at the Israel Antiquities Authority, said some coins belonged to Emperor Phocas (602-610), but most belonged to Heraclius’ successor.
With its age, historical value and pure gold material, it can be said that this is an unparalleled and desirable treasure for the world archaeologists. Ancient coins are one of the most revealing artifacts, from the history of the dynasty that minted it, the metallurgy and metalworking skills of the people of that period, the trade relationships..
