Here is the most important information Oda has revealed about the Revolutionary Army in One Piece.
One Piece presented Monkey D. Dragon and the Revolutionary Army over 20 years ago, and yet they remain a mysterious entity. Very little has been said about them after almost 1100 chapters of the manga.
However, fans are starting to have enough information to create a general picture of the infamous revolutionaries that threaten to take down the series’ world order. While it’s inevitable that Eiichiro Oda will keep unveiling more and more about them from now on, here is a recap of all the relevant information about the Revolutionary Army which has been confirmed thus far.
The following contains spoilers for the One Piece manga and the anime adaptation.
8. The Spark That Lit The Revolutionary Army
Not long ago Oda finally showed a sneak-peak about the origin of the Revolutionary Army thanks to the Straw Hat crew landing on Egghead Island. During a flashback scene by Dr. Vegapunk, it was shown that the turning point was no other than the destruction of Nico Robin’s homeland, Ohara. It was there where he met with Monkey D. Dragon who until then was a pacifist and anti-government activist. However, the destruction of Ohara just because they had knowledge about the Void Century really turned the tables for him. That was 22 years ago, counting from the current timeline in the manga.
As he told Vegapunk, he would create a military force that can actually fight back against the crimes of the World Government. Within a single year, Dragon teamed up with Emporio Ivankov and Bartholomew Kuma, which spawned the Revolutionary Army. Since then, they have been involved in numerous conflicts throughout the world. Still, most of their acts are yet unknown.
7. Luffy Being Saved By The Revolutionaries
It’s impossible talking about the Revolutionary Army without mentioning One Piece‘s protagonist Monkey D. Luffy. From family to friends, to actual encounters and helping each other, the Revolutionaries and Luffy have always been connected. The first time this came to play was when Monkey D. Dragon came out of nowhere to save Luffy from Smoker. The Revolutionary Army Leader and Founder was revealed as Luffy’s father, adding to, probably, the most powerful family in the world.
The second time he was saved by them was slightly different. Although he was not exactly the same when the Straw Hat fought Bartholomew Kuma he willingly sent every single one of them to the perfect place in order to improve their abilities and escape a certain death after attacking a Tenryuubito. Thanks to that Nico Robin was living and working with the Revolutionary Army during the time skip. On the same note, Sanji ended up on Momoiro Island, also known as the Kamabakka Kingdom, where Emporio is from, and where they will eventually locate their base of operations.
6. Luffy Working Hand To Hand With Them
Luffy crossed paths with them when he went to Impel Down, the highest security prison, to rescue Ace. What he did not know is that Ace was moved from there to Marineford where the execution was going to take place. Luffy was defeated and imprisoned. In the depths of Impel Down, he encountered Emporio Ivankov and Inazuma, two Revolutionary Army commanders. Together they managed to escape, heal Luffy and go to Marineford in a last desperate attempt of rescuing Ace. Ivankov and Inazuma remained by Luffy’s side until the conflict came to an end.
The most important moment of this relationship came after the time skip. In Dressrosa, Luffy ran into his other brother, Sabo, who not only had inherited Mera Mera no Mi, but he was also the number 2 of the Revolutionary Army. With Sabo and other comrades, they freed Dressrosa from Doflamingo’s threads and expanded the bond between the Revolutionaries and the Straw Hat even more.
5. Objectives And Ideology
They have a clear primary objective, to overthrow the World Government. The reason is the corruption and oppression their rule has brought upon the world, with the tyrannical World Nobles (Tenryuubito) as its epicenter. To do so, their focus thus far seems to be centered around liberating small islands from Government control, the ones that have been the most oppressed in one way or another. It’s a long path to achieve their ultimate goal, but it helps them gain more members and power while they slowly weaken the enemy. Despite having a common objective with the pirates, they often oppose them and help the people defeat pirates for their abusive acts.
The Revolutionary Army has a clear far-left ideology. Oda himself has said that Dragon is inspired by Ernesto “Che” Guevara. By defying the established political model they pretend to institute a communist-like rule after finally defeating and overthrowing the current one. This connects with the Void Century, how a better society was brought down into ruin and forgotten by history, so the World Nobles can maintain power in a failed state than only serves their childish wishes and lets ruin, oppression and injustice run free in a putrid world. After seeking more peaceful manners for a while, Dragon realized that the only way to change the world was through a violent armed revolution that completely destroys the previous economic structure, one of the early Marxist principles.
4. Structure And Known Hideouts
As an independent militia, the Revolutionary Army is always accepting new members. They train them and later assign them to certain stakeouts or missions depending on their combat prowess. They currently have a system based on a supreme commander, Dragon, a Chief of Staff, Sabo, and Commanders of each army, which also has a Deputy or Vice-Commander. The differentiation for the armies lies in the territory. There are five, the G Army from Grand Line, the North Army from North Blue, the East Army from East Blue, the South Army from South Blue, and the West Army from West Blue.
Their flag consists of an R and an A with a dragon design in the middle all in black on a dark-red background. Although they have strategic locations all across the world, their original base of operations was Baltigo, an island in the Gran Line. After a battle with the Blackbeard Pirates, they were forced to move their base to the Kamabakka Kingdom, where Sanji landed. Although not much is known about their fleet, a huge ship called Wind Granma was shown a couple of times.
3. Notable Members
Some of them have already been mentioned such as Monkey D. Dragon, Emporio Ivankov, Bartholomew Kuma, Inazuma, and Sabo. In Dressrosa with Sabo were Koala and Hack. It’s not known exactly what are their ranks, but it was confirmed that at least Koala is a high-ranking officer. Some of the Commanders have been presented from time to time. Emporio and Inazuma act as Commander and Deputy for the G Army. Belo Betty and Ahira are the Commander and Deputy of the East Army. Karasu is the Commander of the North Army. Morley is the Commander of the West Army. Lindbergh is the Commander of the South Army.
Other members of the Revolutionary Army that have been mentioned or have appeared thus far are Terry Gilteo, Bunny Joe, and Raise Max, although Raise is a non-canon character that only appears on One Piece Gold. As the conflict between them and the Government heats up more members will be revealed, like the Deputies of the North, West, and South Armies.
2. The Power Of The Dragon
One doesn’t get the title of “World’s Worst Criminal” without also being one of the strongest. Monkey D. Dragon’s power level is still a mystery. He did stop Smoker like it was nothing, and it seems he might be able to control the weather, however, that’s unconfirmed. He allegedly went head-to-head with Blackbeard and managed to retreat without losing many lives if any, that alone gives him a pretty high standard. He also possesses all types of Haki.
The second in command, on the other hand, has shown what he is capable of. Sabo is the user of one of the most powerful Devil Fruits and his Armament Haki is one of the strongest. He developed his own combat style called Ryusoken (dragon claw). His last shown bounty was 603 million berries.
1. The Commanders’ Devil Fruits
Emporio Ivankov has an outstanding physical ability and a very interesting Devil Fruit. The Horu Horu no Mi allows the user to modify a person’s hormones effectively changing the person dramatically if wanted to. Belo Betty has the highest bounty among the Army Commanders, but not for her sheer power but for her totally convenient ability. She has the power of the Kobu Kobu no Mi which allows her to encourage people into fighting and improves their strength. Perfect for a revolution.
Morley, apart from being a giant, has the Oshi Oshi no Mi, a fruit that allows her to push and mold the ground at will. Lindbergh Inazuma is the user of the Choki Choki no Mi, which grants him the ability to shift a part of his body into scissors that cut through anything like a piece of paper. Lindbergh is not known to have the power of a Devil Fruit but is a Mink weapon expert. Karasu’s fruit has not been specified but as said by his comrades, he could fight equally with a Navy Admiral, and it will most likely be a zoan type.
