Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is ‘really obsessed’ over agreeing a new contract with Old Trafford favourite Marcus Rashford, respected journalist Fabrizio Romano has told GiveMeSport.
The Red Devils have been fairly quiet during the January transfer window, having only acquired Jack Butland and Wout Weghorst on loan, and now they have set their sights on tying one of their stars down to fresh terms.
Man United transfer news – Marcus Rashford
According to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United have opened discussions with Rashford’s representatives ahead of potentially putting an improved contract on the table.
The report suggests ten Hag has also urged the Red Devils’ academy product to put pen-to-paper as Old Trafford is ‘the best place’ to continue his career.
Although Manchester United took advantage of a one-year extension option written into Rashford’s current contract, it still means he has entered the final 18 months of his £200,000-per-week deal.
The Red Devils are keen to agree fresh terms with the winger after attracting strong interest from reigning Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Romano recently told GiveMeSport that Manchester United ‘want to be fast’ in reaching an agreement with Rashford.
What has Fabrizio Romano said about Rashford?
Romano understands that ten Hag is desperate for Rashford to commit his long-term future to Manchester United by signing on the dotted line.
The Italian journalist is aware that the Red Devils will attempt to persuade the England international, who is valued at £48million by Transfermarkt, to put pen-to-paper.
Romano told GiveMeSport: “I’m told that ten Hag is really obsessed with the contract extension of Marcus Rashford and it’s something they will try to do.”
Does Rashford deserve a new contract?
Rashford seems to have taken his game to the next level since ten Hag moved into the Manchester United dugout last summer, with Sofascore statistics showing he has averaged a Premier League goal every 180 minutes this season.
The 25-year-old appears to be in the form of his life as, ahead of the FA Cup fourth round tie with Reading, he had found the back of the net 10 times in his last 10 appearances, meaning he had got his name on the scoresheet on 18 occasions since the campaign got underway.
Rashford’s performances have resulted in ten Hag claiming ‘he is unstoppable’, which emphasises he is highly-regarded behind the scenes.
Only Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro have been handed better average domestic match ratings than Rashford’s 6.98 by WhoScored this season, further highlighting his importance to Manchester United.
Rashford has made more than 330 appearances for his boyhood club and there is no doubt he deserves an improved contract.
