Manchester City legend Shaun Goater has claimed that Pep Guardiola will be keen not to lose to his ‘student’ Mikel Arteta when the two teams face each other in the FA Cup this weekend.
Friday night’s clash will be the first time the two sides have met this season in any competition after the Premier League game had to be rescheduled for this year after a Europa League tie was moved. Guardiola does have a good historical record against Arteta though.
The two managers have faced each other on six occasions with the Catalan boss winning on five occasions and Arteta winning just the once. That victory came in the FA Cup back in 2020 but for the most part, Guardiola has held the advantage over his prodigy.
Arteta was an assistant to Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium before making the switch to the Emirates Stadium and he is now overseeing his best season yet in North London as the Gunners lead the title race. However, according to Goater, City’s boss will be wanting to show his dominance over Arteta on Friday.
Speaking to City’s official website, the 52-year-old said: “Make no mistake about it, both teams will want to win. Arteta will want to win that because psychologically he’ll be saying: ‘Listen, we won the game in the FA Cup and we can go and do this in the league’.
“Pep does not want to be losing to any student at all. They’re both top managers – Pep doesn’t want to lose that game.
“He’ll want to win it and leave the marker there. And once we move onto the league game, he’ll say: ‘Right, this is how we’re going to approach it’.

“It may be tactically slightly different but both teams will want to win that game.”
