Wednesday & Enid’s Relationship Is Key To Season 2 (Romantic Or Not)

Wednesday season 1 featured Wednesday and Enid’s great unlikely friendship, and this relationship should remain a major part of Wednesday season 2.

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Wednesday season 1.

Whether it’s romantic or not, the relationship between Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) and Enid (Emma Myers) is key to Wednesday season 2. A big focus of Wednesday season 1 was the budding relationship between Wednesday and normie barista Tyler (Hunter Doohan)—at least until he was revealed as the Hyde—as well as a tease of romance between Wednesday and fellow psychic student Xavier Thorpe (Percy Hynes White). However, the most important relationship is arguably the friendship between Wednesday and her roommate Enid. Wednesday’s relationship with Enid in Wednesday season 1 was more developed and fleshed out than any of her potential romances, making for a compelling on-screen watch.

At the start of Wednesday season 1, Wednesday isn’t fond of Enid at all. In Wednesday, the werewolf Enid is her complete opposite; while Wednesday is morose and deadpan, Enid is bubbly and kind. Wednesday is initially resistant to Enid’s attempts of befriending her, and things come to a head in episode 6, “Quid Pro Woe,” when Enid becomes fed up with Wednesday’s attitude and moves out of their room. However, Enid moves back in the next episode, and the two roommates reconcile. By the end of the Wednesday season 1 finale, Wednesday and Enid have shared their first hug; a meaningful moment considering Wednesday isn’t usually very affectionate.

Wednesday & Enid’s Friendship Must Remain The Heart Of The Show In S2 (& Beyond)wednesday and enid friendship

Now that Wednesday has become a success for Netflix, the show might go even bigger for its second season. However, its core elements must remain the same, and that includes Wednesday and Enid’s relationship. It’s likely that Enid and Wednesday would choose to live together again during their next semester at the supernatural boarding school Nevermore Academy, giving Wednesday a great opportunity to further develop their friendship. Now that Wednesday has embraced Enid as a friend, Wednesday season 2 can continue to strengthen the roommates’ bond. It’s fine for Wednesday season 2 to raise the stakes, but Wednesday and Enid’s relationship still deserves to be a major focus.

The friendship between Wednesday and Enid is a cornerstone of the show, especially Wednesday’s character arc. Wednesday season 1 begins with its titular character emotionally closed off and unwilling to form relationships at Nevermore, but it ends with Wednesday being a little more caring and willing to give someone a hug. A big part of Wednesday’s character growth is due to Enid’s presence in her life. Though Wednesday initially hates Enid’s personality, it’s clear that the werewolf has affected her positively. This further proves how integral the Wednesday and Enid friendship is to Wednesday; going forward, it should continue to be a key part of the show.

For now, there aren’t confirmed plans to make Wednesday and Enid a romantic couple. Aside from Wednesday’s season 1 love triangle, Enid has her own love interest: the gorgon Ajax (Georgie Farmer). However, the creators of Wednesday haven’t ruled a romantic relationship out, mentioning in an interview (via The Hollywood Reporter) that they’re open to everything, including how the characters develop. They’re clearly aware of the passionate response to a potential Wednesday and Enid couple, and it’s a promising sign that they are receptive to the idea down the line. Still, Wednesday season 2 should focus on developing Enid and Wednesday’s dynamic more before having their characters take that step.

A Wednesday and Enid romance could be great. Jenna Ortega and Emma Myers play well off of each other, and their actresses have been open to the idea. Wednesday and Enid’s opposite personalities can also make their romantic pairing entertaining to watch. However, the two characters should only be in a romance if it feels right for the story of Wednesday season 2. More queer representation would be great, but a romance between Enid and Wednesday should only be added if it develops organically. Regardless of whether they become romantic or stay friends, Wednesday and Enid’s relationship in Wednesday needs to remain at the heart of the Addams Family reboot.
