Bruno Fernandes rued Manchester United’s wastefulness in front of goal after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Wednesday evening.
Michael Olise netted a stunning 91st-minute free-kick to earn Palace a share of the spoils, cancelling out Fernandes’ first-half opener. The former’s late heroics brought United’s 10-game winning run in all competitions to an end, denying them the chance to move up to second in the Premier League table.
United dominated the game for long spells, boasting more than 60 per cent of the possession, but did not do enough to test Vicente Guaita in the Palace goal, registering just four shots on target. Debutant Wout Weghorst was starved of service and Marcus Rashford struggled to impose himself as much as he has done in recent weeks.
United, though, squandered a gilt-edged opportunity right at the death through Casemiro, who, somehow, failed to fully connect with a corner from the right flank after Olise’s leveller.
“We knew it’s tough to play here,” Fernandes told Sky Sports. “We could have lost the game. We’re not happy with a draw.
“We should have taken our chances and closed the game. They scored a great goal at the end. Nothing we can do now.
“We have to look forward now. Other games are coming. We’re still doing good things. We’re really disappointed with the result but the next one is close. We have to prepare the game. Not too much time to recover.”
